Orphan Review

Orphan opened up this past weekend and I caved in and went to see it. Now, I normally don't go to the movies because I'm broke, yep. Despite the ads you see and the constant linking to Amazon.com I make no money from any of my endeavors and therefore I can't afford to go. However, this weekend I splurged and went.

Orphan, on the surface, has a simple plot. A family adopts a little girl, she begins to grow psychotic, and bad things happen. Not too unlike many other orphaned kid horror movies from the past, only this one has a twist in the third act.

The trailer for Orphan was taken away due to copyright...i hate the studios.

The movie takes a long time to build up. The opening sequences are pretty raw, focusing on a parallel diagram of sickness of child birth, mixed with blood amidst white walls and floors, streaking through the thick substance we are introduced to this nightmare for the main character, only to realize that it is a dream.

The film progresses and we see that the family unit is getting a third. She's an awkward foreign child and seems to be a nice fit. She goes through some growing pains, and it appears that she's not exactly too liked by her new surroundings. She quickly befriends a little girl, her new sister, who's deaf and they turn out to be friends amidst incredible odds.

The story is not too unlike the film The Good Son, which I reviewed a couple of days ago. The film in fact also shares a common thread with The Changeling as the director focuses on the turmoil between the parents coping with their marriage and a new child in their family. The film, as stated previously, takes a long time to set up the third and fourth acts, and really could find a lot of people bored with how the film goes. There are some nice gore sequences set up for the purpose of killing the mundane, but if you're not into the film by the halfway point, the twist won't matter.

The twist is tremendous. The family finds out about their little girls past and realize that she's not so little and she's not so innocent. The transformation between psychopath to super human begins and we are treated to a frantic fourth act with a lot of careful plotting left behind for a more intricate bludgeoning.

The film fails in a few moments. The drama that is built in the family is recognizable to me. I understand the complexity of the human emotion and how marriages can sag and struggle through near divorce. The horror elements are an after thought to me, and therefore the payoff isn't that great towards the end. I do appreciate the attention to sound design as we hear crunches, bones breaking and a lot more when the time comes.

I didn't think that the twist and story made sense, but I liked how it was handled. I didn't like the cinematography of the violence in the end. It seemed like the camera went from nice overall tones to frenetic "Crank" style camera, shaking and jostling the viewer to get a reaction that wasn't really there.

Orphan is quite good, however, it is longwinded and the pay off is mediocre. Artistically I loved this film. I thought the images were beautiful, the shots were carefully placed, and the end credits were very lovely. I appreciated it the art and the amount of work that was put into setting things up, but the execution of the final horror elements didn't do it for me. Plus, the twist...oh man...you'll either love it or you'll hate it. I am going to say I loved it, but only because I didn't really see it coming, maybe I'm losing my touch.

From The Mailbag Late July Edition

Once again we are going to our comments, mail and reader suggestions for a post. I've been slacking lately, but it appears that so has everyone else, assuming anyone actually reads my musings on this horror movie site of mine. I've been delaying some things to get better acquainted with others, and will have more reviews next week as I have recently acquired some nice box sets and other things to review. I'm broke so that's a rarity to get some new horror flicks.

Let's get into the mail:

The Nobody said in response to my review of The Good Son:

I think the most interesting thing about this movie is its author. The screenplay is written by Ian McEwan, one the most celebrated literary novelists of our time. He wrote The Comfort of Strangers - a chilling book and even chillier film with Helen Mirren - and Atonement, the Academy Award Nominated film. He is truly a gifted writer and it shows in The Good Son, which is an unexpectedly good film.

You are absolutely right. The book "The Comfort of Strangers" is definitely a good one. Oh and yes Atonement had some great acting for sure. He is a great writer and they really did make this film into something more than the advertising and box covers led you to believe. I actually saw this film on a whim when I was younger and most recently saw it again, the same things that made the movie chilling back then made it good this time around. How timely is it that I reviewed this when there's a new scary kid movie hitting theaters this weekend? I'll check out The Orphan cause I'm bored, and review it for next week. Thanks for the comment, you brought some great insight to my lame review of The Good Son.

the posturing (and admittedly rather irritating) little popinjay said in regards to my post Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl Trailer:

I`ve got to see this film for the hot chicks and gore. That tom and jerry cartoon was hilarious it brought back a lot of good memories.

I admit, the actresses in these Japanese horror films are amazing. They are beautiful women and make me wish that I could've met some Japanese women when I was younger and single. In fact, I never see any hot girls in my line of work, and furthermore I haven't talked to someone outside of my coworker in a long time. We are seriously like the I.T Crowd show, just two of us in a room. Sad.

Tom and Jerry are definitely great. I love those toons, and wish that modern cartoons captured that sense of reckless violence. Instead we have Sponges and Star fish...but I love them too.

That's it, there were only 2 comments in roughly 30 days+ time. I'm not doing a good job, I can see that, and apparently no one is reading or responding. But that's not why I started this site, I started it because I genuinely enjoy horror. So until next time, stick around these parts. We have a couple things line up, the month end posts and then a new month of horror film!

Top 40 Most Violent Comic Books Ever

So today, more technical difficulties occurred for me and this site. Well, mostly something happened with my dvd que on netflix. I had a few good things planned and instead of sending me my horror picks, I got some television picks. I then thought of plan b, but that fell through and after running out of time, and panicking I ran into something relative to this site.

Right now over at the Complex site they have run down the 40 most violent comic books of all time. These range from insane to utterly graphic and gore filled. I included two shots from the site, and you have to appreciate these things. There's no bigger gore fest than modern comics these days, and well...that's what's up for today.

I'll have a mail post for the next update and then try to get more updates. I'm scatter brained, but I'll get back in order...so check out the top 40 most violent comic books.

Rewind: The Ruins Review

The Ruins Dvd

REWIND: So today, I decided to take a trip back and watch The Ruins. I saw The Ruins when it came out in major release. I really wanted to see it because it was one of the first movies of 2008 that I remember being Rated R and it showed. Withing moments of the first few scenes you got to see gratuitous horror nudity! ZIING!

Jenna Malone's forehead takes up a good part of some of the movie, so watch out for that.

The medical scenes and amputation are amazing, they are full of gore and if the hole in the leg doesn't get you, the sound of the flesh being taken out butcher style will haunt you for days afterwords.

The unrated version doesn't do a whole lot more to add to the film. I didn't really notice a HUGE difference between the dvd and the movie I saw last year in theaters, but then again, sometimes you miss things the first time on dvd. I did enjoy this one, and while I think it's a minor horror movie, it's still packs a good punch. So enjoy my review from last year, as I go back and watch something new for Wednesday's update.

The Original Review posted opening weekend of The Ruins original Theatrical run:

The Ruins is the latest horror movie to hit movie theaters with not much of a promotional campaign behind it. I didn't really know of a lot of movies opening this weekend for it to compete with, but this movie was great for a few reasons...and not so great for a few reasons.

First and foremost this movie was Rated R! I know that some don't like movies to be rated R, but this was a great thing to me, because that would ensure at least some gore, and some nudity...I'm a sicko I guess.

A group of vacationing twenty-somethings decide to check out an excavation of some old Mayan ruins, when things go awry.

They are stuck on the ruins because the villagers believe it is haunted somehow, and it turns out that the weeds and vines are flesh eating. Along the way delirium sets in, and the friends begin to turn on each other and some start to die, some horrible deaths.

The gore scenes deal with cutting off a guy's legs, stabbing a guy in the heart, and cutting off chunks of human flesh and pull weeds and vines out of the human body. The vines resemble snakes more than anything vegetative and the movie takes some serious gross out turns.

Overall the film is slow moving, and hard to sit through. However, the actors are not half bad and do a great job of acting out the fear, and uncertainty that is evoked through the situation. You almost feel sorry for the characters because they behave exactly how vacationing people would, and not just stupidly cite one liners.

This film is worth the $5 I paid for it (thanks to AMC's $5 deal before noon) and while the premise seemed a little far fetched, it did have enough scary elements to stand up against other dark dwelling movies like: The Cave, The Descent, and creepier films of the same genre.

The Good Son Review

The Good Son Poster

The year was 1993 and a young Macaulay Culkin was on the rise as the new child star and alongside him was a young Elijah Wood, not as famous but equally as talented. The latter would have a greater career and one might even argue that the ending of this film focused on who would be greater in the long run, but let's not poke fun, yet. The movie I am reviewing today, finally reviewing a real film, is not one that many people saw. Out of all the people I spoke to, no one saw this film. I saw it and thought it was good at the time, but in 1993 I was 10 years old, what the hell did I know about movies? So here we go, a horror/thriller that is now being replicated often...or at least in theory. Join me in reviewing, thinking, and judging The Good Son. (que the scary music)

The Good Son was an odd psychological thriller of a film that starred, as stated above, Macaulay Culkin. Now, if you're not familiar with his body of work, then you should remember that he did Home Alone, Richie Rich, and a slew of other children's films where he was screaming or alone or getting into hijinx of all types. He was NOT the perfect man for the job, on paper. To call him a man is an insult, since he was a young kid when this film went into production. The story's plot is simple yet has a slight twist on the weird child formula. Mark Evans, played by Wood, sees his mom die of cancer and believes it his fault somehow. His dad has to go out of town on business and lets Mark stay at his relatives, this is where Henry, played by Culkin, comes into the picture. The two are quick friends, being of similar age, but things start to go sour slowly.

Here's a trailer for The Good Son:

As the movie progresses, we start to see that Henry is not a good kid, he's kind of odd. He loves violence and cruelty, in one key scene he even kills a dog. When Mark speaks up to his relatives, they don't believe him because Henry just looks like a sweet kid. As the deck gets more tense, we find out that the family lost a son recently, and that Henry was responsible, out of jealousy drowning his brother and playing innocent later. Things keep progressing, and the movie turns into a proverbial powder keg ready for someone to ignite the wick and watch it explode, and then the wheels come off.

The movie becomes really chilling, Mark and Henry become bitter rivals. Henry believes that Henry is trying to steal his mothers love, Mark thinks that his aunt could be his mother or a reincarnation of her, and things really get going. This movie builds up a staircase of tension only to find itself in interesting territory with Susan (mom & aunt) holding onto two kids off a cliff...who will she choose to save? She can't save both...she just can't.

Visually the film is good. The setting is the northern East Coast, a lovely place to live. The house, the ocean, it's all amazing to view and offsets the idea that horror films have to be dark and gloomy with poor lighting and terrible visualizations. The film sets you up for a big fall with the way the north east is portrayed. You would think that this was a Stephen King adaptation, with the way it portrays small town living and creepy children.

Is The Good Son Scary: Yes. This movie is a scary film. I find it scarier now that I'm older than when I was 10 years old. I am not a father yet, but stuff like this scares me. I am a man of Faith, but I still have these doubts that I can't control kids nor force them into a mold. I shouldn't, since it's useless to fear what is not even in the near future for me...so I think, but it's in my head. More discerning fans of horror will realize how scary this movie really is. What if a child was so bad that he tried to kill you? This is obviously a repeated theme in horror.

Think about all the "scary kids" movies. You can probably cite, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, Hide and Seek, The Orphan, The Bad Seed, The Ring, Children of the Corn, Firestarter, Children of the Damned, The Brood and that's just a few. Most recently there's a movie called "Orphan" that will yet again put a new spin on the old "scary kid" movies. Horror fans are used to this prowess of children, they have more than the nag factor and can create chaos for parents that are not ready for what is to come.

Sure, we can go back and forth on whether or not all Henry needs is a good spanking, but this movie seems further than that. The Good Son creates a nice amount of tension for a film starring kids. I would highly recommend a viewing of The Good Son, as it is still one of the better thrillers in the "creepy kids" genre.

REWIND: Top 3 Camp Camp Horror Movies

Here you go, a rewind post because I had my in-laws in town and couldn't really watch another Argento blood bath.So here it is, a re-post of a post I did a year ago. I know, it's not popular, but hey, I'm tired and it's been a long weekend. Plus, these days I doubt anyone really reads anything I write any more. I still love horror, but these days family is taking the front seat.

I'm working on more stuff though, so don't give up on my ol' site yet. Plus if you have any suggestions, why not help me? Seriously, just let me know what I should watch, review. I'm also on twitter (sirjorgexxx) and aim (thecorporatehero) so don't hesitate to contact me.

Without further bs, here are my all time top 3 Camp Horror Movies:

Camp Horror Films
I’ve always loved horror movies, and I enjoy the idea of remote camp grounds that have some haunted element to it. Ever since I started reading Goosebumps, when I was younger, I always had a love affair with the idea of going away to Camp. However, the movies that rely heavily on slasher elements or hauntings really aren’t talked about as much as they should be, so to bring it back, I thought I would talk about some of my favorites. Keep in mind that these are just my personal favorites, and yours might be different.

So here is my Top 3 camp horror films:

Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th – Some campers have been bad and let Jason Voorhees drown. Now his mom is back to seek revenge on the campers! This movie scared me to death when I was eight years old and first saw it on vhs. Those were the days when you used to have to rent movies from the local Asian dude who happened to have a video store in the middle of his liquor store. I’m from Los Angeles, and lived in an area that wasn’t infiltrated by Blockbuster video yet. This film still sits as a classic of Horror cinema. Many people forget that it wasn’t Jason doing the killing in this film, it was his mom! Mrs. Vorhees is scary, and to this day, the movie holds up really well in the genre.

Here's the original Friday the 13th Trailer:

It still holds up, and if you can find it, the more recent editions have restore picture and updated sound for you guys that have nice set ups.

Sleepaway Camp
Sleepaway Camp – Unhappy campers is the theme of this film. A series of murders take place in the second half of this film, but not before some really long, and boring situations occur. I’m not sure why there is a full length baseball game in the middle of the movie, nor do I understand the gay overtones with the spinning bed and the gender confusions. It’s all interesting though, and this film shows you a lot of good make up effects. Although, you don’t see a lot of gore, nor do you see the violence, you do see the after effects quite nicely. This one spawned two sequels, and rumor has it another one is in production as we speak.

Here's the trailer for Sleepaway Camp:

The twist at the end, will leave you breathless...or will induce vomiting.

Camp Slaughter
Camp Slaughter – Low budget is the way to go these days, as this film was probably bought by Lionsgate for cheap. This movie is filmed in HD and has a good new cover, but the film needs work. Some teens stumbled into a time warp in the woods, where they are transported back to the 1980’s sleepaway camp model of slasher films. The twist in this one is the sheer fact that the day of killings repeats, and it’s up to the new teens to stop the repetition, or else be stuck in the time warp forever! Camp Nightmare has a lot of laughable gore, and is ridiculously funny at moments. You’ll also note that some of the actor’s from the American Pie straight to dvd movies star in this one.

Here's the trailer for Camp Slaughter:

As you can see, the budget was shoe string, and it looks like a thesis for a film student...or just a random low budget, straight to dvd film, but oh well...it's got enough hack and slash for a worthwhile viewing.

While the camp horror movies definitely have a place in horror cinema, it seems that it’s a lot tradition of sorts. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember any new camp horror films in the last few years. But rumor has it some are in the works.

For further viewing check out the following camp films, and see how they compare to my top 3…and if you would like to comment, do so, and let me know your top 3.

Memorial Valley Massacre
Camp Blood
Cheerleader Camp
Cabin Fever
Camp Fear

Frankenhood Review

This latest piece of modern day blaxploitation film is interesting to say the least. The preview makes it seem like it's a modern day take on Frankenstein, but it really dumps out more comedy than anything truly scary. Unless your idea of fear is losing a 3 on 3 basketball tournament.

Frankenhood stars Charlie Murphy, and a bunch of guys that you probably saw in Leprauchan Back to the Hood or Leprechaun in the Hood. The movie looks well enough, the colors are nice, but the plot...wow...it is far from truly terrifying.

Here is a trailer for the 2009 film Frankenhood:

The movie starts really creepy, inside a morgue with lots of test tubes. The colors are reminiscent of ReAnimator, a lot of florescent green and reds. It really is somewhat creepy, and then we meet our two main characters. Two morgue workers fixing a light bulb run into Charlie Murphy who plays Franklin. Franklin is a scientist? It's never really clear what he does there at the morgue, but he is there.

The movie progresses and we get into the Frankenstein storyline, and it's not very good at all. It's worse than Black Frankenstein was in the 70's, it's almost as good/bad as the MADTV sketch Blackenstein and Black Dracula.

Seen here:

The movie never gets creepy. The two friends, in a freak accident, become friends with Frankie, the monster. They then proceed to train and play basketball and enter a 3 on 3 basketball competition. It's hilarious to say the least.

I hate to spoil it for you, but they win.

What? No protagonist?

Well, if you must know, there is a rival basketball team that tries to figure out who in the world Frankie is, and when they figure out he's dead they simply do nothing. Yep, they really don't do much. The crux of the film is lame one liners and simpleton humor mixed with a basketball plot line. Sure it's Blaxploitation but they aren't even trying anymore.

The movie really is terrible, but it looks good. The straight to dvd cinematography isn't really there, and really looks good at times. There is some film grain, and attempts to master the colors which is nice, but the acting is terrible the plot is unbelievable and the story isn't really a Frankenstein story! It just breaks all the rules. Then again, watching Frankenstein play basketball isn't half bad.

Frankenhood looked scary...but ended up being just another bad attempt at comedy. It has a few one liners, but it's no Friday After Next. Watch at your own risk; the scariest part of Frankenhood is that there are people out there green lighting these things.

I Present Evil Ernie

Evil Ernie is a comic book character from Chaos Comics. I ran into some cool artwork that was so horror related that I couldn't pass up sharing it with you, my 2 readers left.

First though, I have to apologize at the amount or rather lack of amount of updates and reviews. I've been juggling a LOT of different things. I've been reading more for reviews that I'm now sponsored to right. I've been picked up by Random House publishing to be a reviewer, unpaid for now, but it's nice to get free books. I'm also juggling more freelance work, because I need to pay off my debts which are immense. Plus, amazon affiliate links don't pay me very well at all. In fact, no one buys anything.

So today, I was going to get "Frankenhood" reviewed, but I didn't get it in the mail yet. Sometimes the USPS dictates how far I can review, so for Friday I'm hoping to get that reviewed for you guys.

In the meantime, I got these screens from Evil Ernie, and they are large photos, click on them for detail. Evil Ernie is like Slash from Guns N Roses mixed with Eddie from Iron Maiden, which is rad. Click the images to get bigger versions, and please support me by sticking around.

5 Cool Bodily Explosions in Horror Film

This weekend I was out of town, so while I wasn't able to watch a full horror film. However, as the fireworks were going off in the air, I thought about the top 5 bodily explosions in horror. Now, this list is not expert, it's not even that good. But it's all I could think about, so here are 5 films that will entice your gore palate. I have included trailers too...you might disagree, and I already think I'm wrong...but here are just a quick 5.

Terror Firmer Dvd on Sale Now
1. Terror Firmer - Terror Firmer has some sick gore, and some sick sexual innuendo. But what do you expect from Troma? This film is not a great visionary horror film, however it has enough of a punch to create some good times for all involved.

Chopping Mall Dvd
2. Chopping Mall - Chopping Mall not only has a cool movie poster it's one of the better "robot" warning movies of all time. It's really cool to see killer robots in the mall. It reminds me of a Simpsons episode.

Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland Dvd on Sale
3. Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland - Sleepaway Camp 3 is the worst in terms of story (in the series) but the better of the three films in terms of pure gore. It can probably be reduced to just 10 minute clips of pure gore. Not bad.

Grindehouse Planet Terror 2 Disc Dvd on Sale Now
4. Planet Terrror - Planet Terror, wow, a throwback if there ever was one. There is so much gore in this film that You can't just watch it once. Watch it twice, thrice, who knows, the better half of the Grindhouse film that came out a few years back.

Scanners on Dvd Now
5. Scanners - Not exactly my #1 pick but of course I had to include it. It's the most recent old school horror film that I saw.

What's your top 5? I mean, honestly, this isn't even the definitive top 5 for me. It's just 5 random ones I pulled out of my memory on a Monday morning. There are way better ones, Meet The Deedles? Bad Taste? Dead Alive? There's just so much out there. Let me know what you're fun gore moments are. Here's a super special extra one:

You know what? This is a poor list...but hey...it's a Monday after a Holiday, cut me some slack.

The Future of Horror Looks Grim

This week I'm going out of town. Well just the weekend. However, I had to write a little post to show you a couple of new movies out right now that are hilarious and horror related.

First up, we have this trailer for the movie "FRANKENHOOD". This movie takes the Frankenstein idea and spins it...literally. We get a monster who's sole purpose is to win a basketball tournament! Yep. It's like Encino Man...only not.

Frankenhood

Here's the trailer:

Not to be outdone in the comedic horror movie genre. The same studio that brought you the most gore filled movies of yesteryear, does it one more time. How can they top their previous body of work?

With Robogeisha! Yep...but I personally hate CG blood....here's the trailer:

The Future of Horror looks grim. Admit it. With a slew of remakes, and stupid clones, there seems to be nothing on the horizon that is really worth noting. So even though this post is not an extensive post on how bad things are, it should be noted that the future of horror films banks on straight to dvd films that should become cult classics.

Consider Bubba Hotep...if it was released in theaters it bombed. However, it is now considered a cult classic.

Obviously I could be wrong, and usually am. However, we'll get back to horror this monday. For now, enjoy your weekend.
