Here I am sitting around at the end of my work day listening to a band named Flanders and am posting this end of the month recap. For those of you that love Halloween, hooray for you! For those of you like me, you'll probably watch something on tv and go to bed early or something.

Did you really think I’d make it this far in the world of horror movie blogging? I didn’t think that at this point I’d be blogging to an audience of around 20 or 30, but look, there are people that actually like to read the site, even if I’m the worst movie reviewer since Jon Lovitz. This month’s winner of the Total Recall Blu Ray has been contacted and it will be sent via mail soon. Thank you for those that participated in our first major contest in a long time.

There are a few things I wanted to talk about before I give you the links from this past month’s writings, especially for those that are looking forward to see what else I’ll be doing for September.

The past Month

The past month I’ve upped the number of posts that I’ve made, and I’ve tried hard to keep this thing going. For September you can expect more of the same, and then some. I’m toying with double posts, but it probably won’t happen. I will however be posting more “articles” in regards to horror and what not, because I need the traffic and right now the readership is low, and would love to have more readers and eventually rent out a theater in Los Angeles for a special screening of “Silent Night Deadly Night”. Now that’s a dream….sadly.

New Comment Policy Starting Today

This time of the month I would traditionally write out all the comments, and then answer them in one large post, twice a month. I guess that's 2 posts, but whatever. Today was going to be one of those days where I painstakingly pine over all your comments, and we talk about the crap you guys are saying, and to be fair, some of it is in fact crap, total crap, but some of it is actually rather entertaining.

The new comment policy defined

This is how it's going to work, since I get such a large amount of comments and I don't want to copy and paste a million comments every 15 days, I'm going to be allowing you guys to just go nuts and comment whenever you'd like, as you've been doing.

The Difference being that I will be commenting in posts, rather than putting them on the front page. I will then see about adding a widget in the sidebar to announce the newest comments, so that you can go over there and talk random trash or bs your way into a conversation of a million comments.

That being said, the comments that were left from November 30th - December 14th will now start getting replies from me, so you'll have to back track or wait for the widget.

This comes only because I've been getting far more comments in my inbox than I choose to compile and talk about in the posts, so lucky you, you get real time commentary from me, because I still have no damn job and not even a reply.

From The Mailbag End of November 2010 Edition

From the mailbag is back once again, only because we're a couple of posts away from the end of the month. Before I dive into your feedback, I want to make sure you guys were aware of a couple of quick things.

First and foremost, this December I will NOT be doing a "holiday of horrors" like I did last year. If you have forgotten, last year I wrote reviews specifically in the "holiday horror" category, and this year I'm not going to do that. But I will be doing reviews, so stay tuned.

Secondly, on a personal note, I still haven't found any type of employment. With that being said, if you deem it necessary to purchase movies and media this holiday season, please utilize the amazon links found on this page, to do so. Thank you.

Now, for the comments, and a few of my own zingers, but mostly you guys. Jervaise, some of your comments don't really require my response, as there is nothing more to say.

Wow, this month is flying by, or maybe it's not going by fast enough. For me, it's going by tremendously slow. I have no job, no future, and sold my comic book collection this week for money...ugh...I don't want to remind myself. Here's the comments up to this point.

Spot on review to be honest mate. I am a huge fan of Rob Zombie's stuff but i just really did not enjoy this movie as i have all the others. It feels like this was a rush job. I may have got it wrong but the amount of effort and overpowerwing madness in part 1 seemed like a different director to this picture. I just wish he would have left if 5 years or something and just come back with another Classic. Dont get me wrong obviously the originals will always win the battle of the greatest but in the same field i must admit Robs version was just brilliant i think. Part 2 like you say had alot of missing "oomph" or story as ya say. Overall i really wanted to enjoy this and waited untill this weekend to watch it. I just felt let down and was pretty gutted it did not reach the expection's in which i had for it.

Nevertheless, I still hold Zombie in high regard and look forward to all of his work as visually alone it was watching because the guy is so out his brain.

End of the Month Mailbag September 2010 Edition

The end of the month brings us a lot of mail, or rather comments, to posts that I've managed to write, even though I'm sick, jobless, and dead tired. You know, I was talking to my boyfriend a couple of nights ago about this film. I told him the same thing you've stated; Jack Bender and Don Macini should have stopped at the second movie.
You mentioned that the adults were getting killed left and right; where as the children were holding their own. I think that happened mainly because the movie was centered around kids, and during those times kids weren't really killed, (not like today's movies).
Child's play 3 is exactly that- childs' play.

Yes, the second one exploded chucky and everything, bringing him back was stupid. As for kids being killed? It wasn't until "Funny Games" where they really broke that rule. Sure there have been some kids in film getting the ax, but in Funny Games a kid takes a shotgun to the chest close range and bounces off a wall...that's a major taboo. In the film, "The Condemned" a man literally beats the crap out of a woman, which I found taboo for a long time as well. The two are related only because taboos in the 20th century are no longer taboo. Sure, there are foreign films that capitalize on that much more, but in recent years it seems that the shock value is no longer there, unless you're going to rape...and well..we all know that doesn't seem to be quite as unbearable as watching a kid get mopped up in a horror movie. No offense. I mean, does "Chaos" really have the same impact as say Child's Play? Probably not. Then again, I'm an adult male, so maybe I have the wrong perspective. Sorry for the tangent. The main point is, yes they should've stopped at 2. Thank you for your compliments, I'll keep reviewing :)

You're right on all accounts. The movie, to me, felt more like a "Fear Street" or "Goosebumps" novel than a horror movie, and that's not necessarily a great thing. I love R.L. Stine but this film should've been harder.

That concludes the end of the month commentary. I thought about doing a special thing for October and Halloween, but you know what? I don't care enough to do it. I am still looking for a job and just can't get anything, not even Mcdonald's has called me back. I know, it seems way too soon for the middle of the month, but we're about there. I pulled the trigger on this because I've had these comments in my inbox for a while and I got tired of looking at them. So I decided, why not?

A quick update, I've been playing a lot of poker on face book, wishing I had a real job, and maybe some friends to chat with on aim. So far, no go...on all fronts. Oh and I've learned that I suck at poker.

We are at the mid-month point of June, which has been quite good for me. I've been watching the World Cup, and horror movies, trying to stay positive about life, since I have no job still.

So far not a lot has happened in the way of comments, but there was one person that was definitely up for a comment or two.

We are around half way through the month of May, and I've received quite a few comments, and wanted to use this forum to respond and say thank you to anyone that is leaving comments. I still have no job, and I still am watching horror whenever I can.

Idle Hands was definitely a better movie than most people give it credit. I thought, if nothing else, it flowed easily through horror and comedy, without ditching either genre. As for Population 436? Well, that's hit and miss depending on who you are. I thought it had some seriously creepy "Twilight Zone" elements, and live in a small town, so it kind of sends chills up my spine.

Creepy, you're probably right. There wasn't enough sum of creepy moments to make the whole move that great. However, it had some great horror elements, if only flashes, to make it a little better than some of the other films I've reviewed.

Pumpkinhead is VERY B-movie, but it's actually very interesting, at least to me. You have to consider the love of a father, and what he would do for his son. Then you have to think about how evil/scary Pumpkinhead must be for the father to have someone call him back.

This is definitely the best in the franchise. I can't believe they made sequels to this film. It has a relatively good revenge plot and some serious emotion for a B-Movie. I liked it. I saw it as a kid and loved it, and to this day, enjoy it quite nicely.

As I stated last month, I'm doing these comment posts more often. I'd like to thank everyone that has left comments, and continues to support this site. I would one day like to have my own domain name and do all kinds of cool stuff, but I just can't do it right now.

I'm still looking for a job, and am having a hard time in my new city, but this site brings me about $2 a month so I haven't starved yet. Ramen is dirt cheap...that's all I can say about that.

I liked the original version, I thought it was insane. I still love this film, even though many people disagree with the notion. The ending was a bit tacked on, but I loved the musical editing and the classic yellow car chase seen was just superb.

Alright kiddies, I've been getting more replies than usual, and getting hit with a lot of comments...which for once is awesome. So two things I'm going to say real quick before we get to the mail from you, the reader.

1. FREE DVDS AND CRAP: I'm going to be giving away stuff for those that comment. At the end of the month, I'll randomly select a name from a bag of names that comment, and unleash the prize patrol. All you have to do is comment, and wait. If I pick your name I'll announce the winner before the next MAIL BAG post as the first item of speech.

I had no idea what was going on, nor what was on the camera. It didn't make sense to me at all, but the way the edited the swerves, twists, and turns to music, was brilliant. I enjoyed that quite a bit. I thought it was great, and I still say the movie was a tough horror/thriller to mess with.

It is because of this movie that I learned to love the werewolf movies, I can still remember how stunned I was every time I saw Eddie transforming himself. Though the film might have some emotional detailes, some cheesy ones too, it is actually based on a shattering idea: in each and everyone of us resides an animal side.

I actually like this first one better than most other wolf films. I think there's a frenetic pacing to the ending that really is hard to rival, even by bigger, better budgets.

There might have been nudity but it wasn't much of an impact, because I don't remember it going down. Maybe? I know there was a shower scene at one point.

I actually think "THE RELIC" is one of the most ludicrously under-rated horror films of the 90`s, it is a quite magnificent film with superb special effects (i just wish Penelope Ann Miller had been 18 at the time of filming and completely naked for the entire movie then it would have been absolutely perfect). It is (for instance) a hundred times better than "SCREAM" (which was released the same year) which i thought was ludicrously over-rated hogwash.

It has some great moments, I admit. However, there are moments that just drag on and just irrelevant to the overall film. Maybe upon another viewing, I'll see the point more.

I'm afraid I disagree w/you, Sir Jorge. SNBN was quite influential, predating 1974's "Black Christmas," a slasher classic, and 1979's "When a Stranger Calls" and the killer-in-the-house-on-phone schtick by nearly a decade, and was first in the graphic blood and gore dept and killer's point-of-view shots, too. The film has been treated badly, and it sounds as if you might have seen a bad print. They are everywhere, and a true uncut print may no longer exist. A guy had a Website devoted to SNBN before he found religion, and he listed all the different VHS releasing co's that had different versions. One VHS print I saw was missing a very bloodthirsty bedroom scene (I saw this in a trailer as a kid and had nightmares for years). Other scenes seem to have been cut badly. I don't remember the version shown on YouTube, but much of the violence seems to have been cut. The movie seems to have been a precursor for "Friday the 13th" and its ilk, but you'd hardly know it as it's pretty anemic! I could explain the plot if you're unsure of it. I just saw it on DVD about a year ago, and it was pretty good. From your review you sound pretty young (I'm 42, and I guess you're 30 or younger). That's not a bad thing! Keep in mind that SNBN was typical of horror movies of its day (low budget, not-so-great lighting). Horror movies didn't have the big budgets of today, the pacing of films was slower, and movies weren't as graphic. These movies made oodles of money. Ever see the original "Last House on the Left"? It played for 15 years and made $55M (it cost $90K to make). The studios took notice and made big budgeted movies that used to play drive-ins and today we have "Die Hard" and the like and no one remembers how they started.

SNBN was made for drive-ins, not art houses, and it really did tie up its loose ends. The sepia imagery was for events that had happened in the past. Keep in mind that movies like this were made by filmmakers w/o much money, and the sepia imagery kept costs down and enabled them to tell their story....

One of the best comments I've gotten in a long time, and it was a wake up call. I had a few emails back and forth with Glenn Allen, and it was definitely an interesting one. In regards to this comment, I already fleshed it out in email format. He brings up a lot of great points, and it's true, the film deserves a second and maybe third chance.

If you liked this one, you'll love "Black Devil Doll" it had a similar streak only far more nudity. Jack Frost 2 is on my radar for next year's holiday of horrors, that's for sure.

Craven only directed 2 of the Nightmare flicks. The first one in 84, and the last one in 1994. he had little to no involvement with he rest of the series except for the first script draft for part 3. What amazes is he can make amazing movies like NOES and Serpent and the Rainbow, and then make a total hackjob like Shocker. This feels like ge was trying to make a new franchise to rival what newline turned Freddy into after he left he series... a supernatural vaudeville comedian, but failed miserably to make a horror villian that's at all memorable or interesting. question: if you're a ghost who can switch bodies, why would every new body have the same limp?

I noticed the limp, and I just went with it. The effects were amazing for the time, and despite how ridiculous the film's premise is, it had some nice punches and created a good sense of horror. However, it fails on many levels, but you must remember that this is the 80's at its best. Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, the movie was ok. However, I saw REC first, and that movie is a lot harsher. It did have a few jump scenes, that's for sure.

It's time once again to look at the mailbag for the latest and greatest comments from you, the fine readers. Well, not that there's a ton of readers, I'm still scraping by with minimal support. Oh and I'm still unemployed, because I'm an idiot and no one wants to hire me. So without further delay, here are the latest and greatest comments from the past 30 or so days.

M. Carter @ the Movies said in regards to my post REWIND: Ted Bundy Review:

Oooooh -- thanks for the suggestion! I am a connoisseur of true crime novels and serial killer lore, so I'm always on the lookout for movies about the likes of Bundy, Gacy, Dahmer, etc.

A few other great serial killer filims: "M," a disturbing German film based (supposedly) on Peter Kurten's murderous exploits, and "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer." The latter is quite possibly the most unnerving movie I've ever seen.

No problem. I reviewed that a while ago, and still think it's one of the more brutal horror films of our time. The sexuality and abuse in the film is worse than most of the porno I've seen, including the kink club sites. I wonder how the actresses were able to deal with the "acting" that was involved, it just seemed extreme to me. Oh well. It's true what they say, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

the posturing (and admittedly rather irritating) little popinjay said in regards to my Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation Review:

Easily the best film that Renee Zellweger has ever appeared in and probably will ever appear in.

Yeah, she's annoying now, but back then? I admit, I think she was really cute. She's just been annoying ever since. I wonder how she was able to "act" when she apparently looked in pain, at least when she was getting choked out. I guess I should listen to the director/cast commentary someday.

Handsome Bryan said in regards to my Dee Snider's Strangeland Review:

This movie is absolutely amazing. The lines are classically hillarious such as the monologue given at the first crime scene from the guy with the thick East Coast accent and the neck tattoo describing body modification and how "different they are" from society. Captain Howdy has some hillarious speeches involving "the ampallang" and "rites of passage that must be physical." I have watched this movie countless times much to the dismay of my girlfriend. And whenever we need something in the background my reply is always, "hey, why donh't we pop in Strangeland?!?!?!"

Dee Snider did it well, and I hear there's a sequel in the works. I personally thought this film was great, it's still good. I don't think it's the greatest, but man, for being an independent film it hits hard and is as relevant today as it was when it first came out. Thanks for he comment, man, you're one brave dude to get your girlfriend to watch this...or at least request it often. I got lucky and married the only girl I know that says "yes" to anything horror related.

I know these guys and can't wait to see this movie. They are in a band called White Collar Sideshow. Thier performance on stage is mind blowing and extremely intense. So this movie has to be even more so. Check them out www.facebook.com/whitecollarsideshow and see this movie as soon as it opens.

I'm hoping T. Benson gets funding for a major release, and to finish the film. I met him and his wife at Tom Fest 2009 and thought he was a genuine guy with a good band. Hopefully they continue to do what they do, and yes, I'll be watching the film when it comes out.

I have even gone out of my way to purchase Holiday Horror films on vhs that are rare and out of print just to make things worth it here on this site. From The Mail Bag Mid October 2009 Edition

Greetings from Moscow, Idaho. I moved here at the beginning of this month and it's been a bit hard adjusting. I still have no job, and out of all the applications I have sent, I've received nothing in return. No call backs, no interviews, and I'm really questioning my manhood. I'm trying to make it, but I'm not sure if I will. I'm trying to avoid moving in with my parents, as I'm married and that's hard...the couch is not forgiving at all.

This month has been terrible for me in terms of horror films. Not only have I been working like crazy to try and get money to make it, I have figured out that I can't watch enough of them to keep the site updated up to now. I have the next few reviews ready in the chamber, and have even picked up a few to watch. I haven't unpacked the last few boxes so that's where I think there's some room for improvement. I'll keep you guys posted, all 2 of you readers out there.

There's some great cinematic motions in this film, and it's under appreciated for that. I liked it, and think it's up there with the best werewolf movies.

Definitely my favorite of them all. The humor that's kind of hard to catch in the original is amped up 100 fold. This is Grand Guignol at it's finest. A side note of the first scene, it was originally much tamer, but after a few test screenings, the execs asked for more gore and that's what they got. There's also a scene that Savini talks about in one of his books that describes a UT vs OU tailgate rally, where Leatherface chews through an entire crowd of celebratory UT fans...it ended up on the cutting-room floor, but it seems it's on the "gruesome edition", so, SOLD.

I have to get the new "gruesome edition" that sounds rad. The movie is one of my favorites, and I'm contemplating getting the import Japanese movie poster for my living room. The wife loves it, but not so sure she wants it as our main art piece for our living room. Anyways, thanks for the comment, keep em coming!

not that i have ever been to this site, but i have stumbled upon this review and feel the need to critique it, lol sorry, ocd i guess...
Your perception of the film is dead on, but as for some facts...
you insinuate the disk is called 'the scariest game in the world' or something to that extent when really, in the movie, that was what the game was referred to, as a discription. The title of the fictional game matches the title of the movie.
" This new imaginary character cajoles the main character and his friend into running around trying to figure out how to stop the cd-rom from taking control of them and the world!"
His friend was really uninvolved w/ any aspect of the plot as far as the game goes, and i feel the obvious sarcastic joke (though funny) wont be so obvious and actually misleading to a reader who hasnt had the privilege of seeing this classic piece of cinema...
Anyway, good review, your opinion of it matches mine, but i couldnt leave w/o pointing those things out... have a good'n

Thanks. I liked the film, don't get me wrong, but it was a little hard to follow and really mustered up a sense of annoyance because of the whole "identity" crisis thing. I hate that in films. THe movie did have a lot of good points, and I recently saw the soundtrack in a record store, so obviously it didn't do so bad. Thanks for the comment, it was a good one.

This month has been moving faster than most. I got fired, I haven't been watching as many horror films, and haven't been having fun not getting a new job. Oh and I'm moving out of state too...great...but here is the latest from the mail bag with your comments and my responses.

You forgot to mention that the film has a pace like a runaway train. Incidentally only one person (Carlson) survives in the Churchill -(space ship/shuttle) Mathilda May looks scarey (despite being nude)and a dont forget Patrick Stewards "anything to oblige commander” a couple of years before his star trek debut. Its a cracking film and yes it's showing its age but its a 10/10 from me

Yeah, you're right, I forgot to mention a few things. This movie is rad in a lot of different ways, but it's slow. I wouldn't give it a ten, but it was great.

There are so many subtle things that made that movie great. The raw cold of the twist with the explicit ending, was definitely great. I can't wait to see it on dvd, it'll rock hard. I think that more people should've saw it, as it was definitely something that the horror genre has been lacking this year...the sense of suspense.
