Angel (1984) Poster

I was first exposed to the movie "Angel" when I saw the poster at a video store in Inglewood, California. I was a kid, but the poster looked like a porno movie, and I always had a fascination with porno posters. This movie came out in 1984, and it is an exploitation movie, that has a tinge of horror, but mostly it's a thriller with notes of sexploitation. This is a grindhouse picture that would play in theaters alongside other B-movies, but it has some good moments. The movie was directed by Robert O'Neill, and stars Cliff Gorman, Susan Tyrrell, Dick Shawn, and Donna Wilkes.

The plot of this movie features an underage girl who is just an average prep school teenager by day, but at night, she becomes a hooker. She walks the streets with her friends, and they are all part of the sex trade, or performing on Hollywood Blvd. After you are introduced to both sides of her world, you start to meet her friends, and they are all performers, or prostitutes. Once the introductions are done, a serial killer strikes, killing prostitutes in brutal fashion. A rogue detective comes on board and talks to the ladies and men of the night and tells them to work in pairs and to keep an eye out, and that he's not going to bust them, he wants to get the killer. Well, the movie progresses and we see the killer stalking Angel and her friends, even her transgender friend, and things get way out of hand. When Angel has enough, she gets found out, her life starts crashing down, and she gets even, with a revolve and street justice.

This is the same kind of movie that you would expect from Charles Bronson and others at Cannon. It's a good movie, in the sense that it has the tropes of a grindhouse movie, with bad acting, illicit elements of sex, and of course vigilante justice. That alone makes this movie one of the many standouts that you'll get to see when it comes to the world of cinema. It's the start of a 4 movie picture series, and it features the same premise nearly every time, with a woman that is working the streets by night, but by day is a normal school girl.

I'm not sure if this is a true to life tail, but it has a bit of sex, violence, and mostly drawn out dramatic moments. It's nonsensical at times, that's for sure. There's a bit of film grit to the movie, and at times I think it's similar to a porno movie that would star Ginger Lynn from the same time frame. In fact, some of the sets even looked like one of her movies that I reviewed online before.

"Angel" is a movie that walks the line between sexploitation and horror. It's not quite horror, it's more exploitation and grindhouse than anything else. It's a stellar ride, and it's something that many people will enjoy, but it's definitely not purely horror. It's a sign of the times, and something that wouldn't get made today. I love the plot, the killing fields, and the idea of the main character being a prostitute trying to make ends meet. She makes the choice, she's not being exploited.

In what could be one of the best series of articles, Scary Film is proud to present to you another voice from the world of horror movie fans. So now, you can't blame me for a crappy website, not that Jason will bring to you crap articles. No pressure Jason. Below you will find a post that highlights 5 faces of evil from actor Richard Lynch. A very  underrated villain, and someone that could easily replace Erik Roberts half the time. How does that guy keep getting hired? Seriously. Unfortunately Richard Lynch passed, which means Roberts will continue to suck up screen time. But then again, age, differences in casting directors, opinions and other crap. What do I know? Obviously not enough. So without further input from me, here's 5 faces of evil starring Richard Lynch.  I've always thought Richard Lynch was one of the greatest movie villains of all time. Why he never faced James Bond I'll never know. Richard Lynch appeared in over 100 film and television projects from 1967 up until his death in 2012 at 72. He list of television appearances alone boggles my mind, Baywatch, Fall Guy, Highlander, ST:TNG, A-Team, Buck Rodgers, Battlestar Galactica etc, etc, need I say more? Below are five of his most fiendish rolls.

1. Invasion U.S.A (1985)

Cannon Films(you know it has to be 80's cheese)

Richard Lynch plays Mikhail Rostov a Soviet agent leading a group of Latin American Communists bent on destroying the fabric of America. I saw this movie for the first time on HBO when I was only six years old. Mr. Lynch's crazed snarling performance left and indelible mark on me forever. Lynch is the perfect foil for the quiet, denim and uzi rocking Hunter (Chuck Norris) who is bent on ending Rostov's terror. I'll be honest I'm writing this whole article just because I saw this movie last night! Let's not forget that director Joseph Zito also directed Red Scorpion, Missing in Action, The Prowler & Friday the 13th 4 (you know the last good one)!

2. Sword and The Sorcerer (1982)



Richard Lynch neither plays the Sword or the Sorcerer in this amazing early 80's fantasy film. He instead plays the mad King Cromwell who revives evil Sorcerer Xusia (Night Court's Richard Moll) so he can conquer another kingdom. Unfortunately the King's rival Talon has a three bladed, projectile shooting sword that ends his evil reign. Richard Lynch won a Saturn Award for best supporting actor on this film. This is my favorite Sword & Sandal epic of the 80's, hands down classic.

3. Bad Dreams (1988)

This time around Richard plays insane cult leader Franklin Harris. Franklin has decided that a mass suicide by fire is just what the group needs to move on to the next plane of existence. A younger member of the group Cynthia (Jennifer Rubin) survives and finds herself haunted by visions of Franklin 12 years later as people around her start to die mysteriously. Growing up I always felt that Bad Dreams was just a bad Freddy knock off. I give it some points though since it's produced by hall of famer Gale Ann Hurd, who's responsible for many of my favorite films. Great film though for Lynch fans, lots of him showing up out of nowhere saying weird scary stuff.

4. Scanner Cop (1994)

Original Scanners producer Pierre David made his directorial debut with the fourth entry in the Scanners series. This is one of those films where the camera gets really, really close to everybody for dramatic effect. He's thinking hard lets look up his nose!! So Richard Lynch is the baddie again and I hope this doesn't ruin anything for you but at the end of the film his head explodes. This even happens after it's revealed that Lynch's character had a steel plate installed over his brain to protect against this sort of attack. Probably too late to get his money back, sheesh that goes for both of us.

5. Vampire (1979)

As the sun sets on the wild streets of late 70's San Francisco something awakens at the base of soon to be built church. Making a guttural noise similar to Mason Verger's boars, Richard Lynch lunges from the dirt a shirtless vampire who has been asleep since the 40's. A Retired cop E.G. Marshall and architect Jason Miller (The Exorcist) are the only two who stand in the way of Lynch. This made for TV movie was suppose to be a pilot, but things never went any farther than the movie. Richard Lynch had often said that this was his favorite roll.

A sad fact about Mr. Lynch; his distinctive look was due to an experience he had in 1967 on LSD. While on the bad trip Mr. Lynch lit himself on fire in Central Park.

6 Houses in Horror That Scared Audiences To Death

I make fun of the idea all the time. Or rather, I tell my girlfriend (more like ask) that we’re moving into the Amityville House. It was most recently on sale, and you know your pal Sir Jorge talked to a real estate agent. Not only do I not qualify, I have the worst credit you’ve ever seen. Divorces will do that to you.

Regardless, of my efforts to move into one of the most haunted places in the world, haunted houses are a staple in the horror genre. I’ve written about scary movies, hauntings, and a lot of other topics in the past, but have not posted a list of the houses that scared audiences the most. A Haunted House movie doesn’t necessarily need to scare you, which is the traditional measuring stick. However, for this list I wanted to highlight movies in which bad things happen in a house, whether ghost or otherwise. So with that in mind, here are the houses that scared audiences, or maybe just me to death.

The Amityville Horror

For goodness sakes, get out the house! Brolin’s portrayal is great in this one and was far spookier than when Van Wilder tried to do it. His porno hair and beard was definitely a highlight for this one. Oh, it wasn’t a porno? Oh, yeah, I forgot. The 1979 release of Amityville Horror stunned audiences and is a staple for horror fans. It’s not that great looking back, but it still holds enough power to scare the average viewer. You’ll also have to remember that it’s kind of based on a true story. It’s a creepy movie, especially with the steady pace, and ultimate ending. The Lutz’s account is shocking regardless of the credibility and the movie still remains one of the better haunted house films you’re going to want to see. If you want to see it in 3-D, the franchise when there…sadly.

Poltergeist

It was 1982 and Tobe Hooper got Steven Spielberg on board to showcase a haunted house movie that is still talked about today. There is a serious creep factor in this one, and the television plays a cool roll. No, it’s not as scary as Videodrome, and of course it’s not as sexualized, but this one is definitely an instant classic. Proving that you should never build your house on ancient burial grounds, and you shouldn’t watch too much television, this scared audiences even with a PG rating. Carol Ann is a memorable role, and one that should never be remade. What? They’re remaking it? Son of a….

The Legend of Hell House

We’re going back to 1973, and this time around the movie is The Legend of Hell House. This is a cool movie with a lot of interesting moments. When I studied this film in college, and read the book that Matheson wrote with a similar name, I was convinced that this was the best haunted house movie and story ever created. Of course, it does have a bit of cheese involved in the making of this, but who cares, it’s awesome. The Belasco House is awesome, spooky, and the 1970s stylized horror moments create some serious scares. Even though some people claim it’s hokey, I think it’s awesome and you should too. Then after all is said and done, go and read the Matheson book of a similar name, because that was a classic. No, it is a classic.

Stephen King has the best stories. You can criticize them all you want, but the dude continues to scare people young and old. 1408 didn’t grab me at first, and I found it boring until the whole thing was turned upside down. Right when I thought it was over, it wasn’t, and John Cusack’s acting really does a great job here. He pulls out his acting chops and isn’t lamenting the loss of a woman to the point where he turns into a big dufus. I loved the way this adaptation takes the character of Mike Enslin and turns a little more believable moments than your average horror movie character. The thoughts, ideas, and notions of an author’s struggle to write and create compelling signatures creeps me out as a writer, especially when fantasy becomes reality. There are forces at work with this one, and they work out quite well.

House of the Devil

That 1980s babysitter in peril card is played with House of the Devil. Not only that, it goes for the gusto in the third act, and finishes things off in a sweet emotional drop that you’ll swear comes from years past. Even though this is a newer entry point on this list, and it’s not a ghost story at all, it still stuns. Satanic ritual, creepy houses, and hot pizza all make for a great film. Oh, there’s more to it than that? Well maybe I want some pizza, ever thought of that? A guy has to eat. Especially when no one is buying dvd’s or paying me to write this site. How about donating some cash for a slice? Pick up a dvd via the amazon links or visit my other sites and click on an ad, I’d appreciate it. I mean, come on, a slice of pizza for a dvd that you’re going to enjoy millions of times? Whatever. House of the Devil is not only a great entry into a scary house, it reminds me of the Motley Crue song that has nothing to do with the movie.

The Shining

My old professor said this was the “Mother” of all haunted house stories. If that’s the case, he definitely picked one of the strongest entry points. The Shining may not be Stephen King’s ultimate vision, but Kubrick was able to frame something so spectacular, that it became all new in many ways. The creep factor really is elevated here, and every single moment is well thought out. Kubrick has a way of making art out of horror and Jack Torrance is a daring character that goes insane. Performance heavy, lengthy, moody, and full of color, this is definitely a stunning display of art and film mixed with horror. You don’t get a lot of movies pushing the envelope like this in the horror genre.

Ok, so this is an oddly written piece. It has terrible infrastructure, and it is more about what happens in the houses than about the houses themselves. But then again, maybe it’s on point. These movies are examples of scary things going on in scary houses.

Review: Death Wish 4 Is The Premier Charles Bronson Movie

My dad was a huge Charles Bronson fan. I don’t know what it was, but there was something that he loved about him. Perhaps it’s the fact that Bronson looked like a European version of my father. Then again, I think my dad looks like the Mexican Jackie Chan. Whatever the case is, I was introduced to the Death Wish series with installment #4. I saw it on VHS and it was classic. My dad let me watch whatever I wanted, so thanks to him this website even exists. The dude ditched me at age 8, but every now and again I’ll hear from him and he’ll tell me he’s proud or something else. I don’t know. It’s been a while.

That’s not what I’m here to talk about, I’m here to talk about an architect turned vigilante. Paul Kersey is a man that is going to take the law into his own hands. Directed by J. Lee Thompson “Death Wish 4” completely blew me away and still is awesome. When Kersey’s girlfriend’s daughter dies of a drug overdose, he has to take down some serious drug trade kingpins and he does so with brutality and NO MERCY!

Once you mess with Paul Kersey, you’re going to die, and not just die, but you’re going to get completely made fun of after the fact. In this movie he takes down a lot of bad guys, and if you pay attention Danny Trejo makes an appearance as “Art Sanella”. The ending of these movies really gets publicity, and this one is no different. Not only is Bronson’s on screen love killed, he exacts revenge with a grenade launcher right at the bad guy, and ridiculous explosions ensue.

This movie is another instance where Cannon creates exploitation glory. The movie is fast paced, and you know what is going to happen. Long before we had a “Jigsaw” killer, there was one man taking the law into his own hands because the police couldn’t help him. That’s what you get with Death Wish and that’s what you get with this 4th installment. It’s a classic, and it’s not necessarily a horror film, but it’s an example of the grindhouse cinema style that inspires many creative film makers to pursue the dream of making movies.

Then again, maybe it just makes people like myself wax poetic about bad acting, extreme violence, and skateboard companies named after a cool series. Death Wish 4 is NOT available on Netflix, those bastards, at least not streaming, so I had to track it down on my own. I recommend it, because it’s Charles Bronson and it’s Death Wish, a big part of my movie history. Check it out for free, or buy it by clicking here.

6 Revenge Movies You Have To See Again

Revenge. It’s best served cold. I’ve always wanted revenge, especially for certain times in my life that I was completely screwed over. However, I allow vengeance to go by without incident, but that’s not what happens in the movies. When you start to look at cinema, you will find that there are a lot of movies that have one thing in mind, revenge.

In my question to see every single movie possible, I have turned my attention to the notion of getting revenge. It may not be a complete genre, but it’s definitely one of the many branches that connects horror movie and scary film aficionados alike. All my lists are a matter of opinion and if you have a differing one, then by all means voice it. If you have such a strong opinion that you absolutely have to let me have it, then write it out in word, and send it to me. I’ll post it. I don’t mind getting hit hard with a differing opinion, just make sure it’s somewhat good.

The best revenge movies are hard to quantify into a simple list, so instead of trying to make a comprehensive option, here are 5 of the best that I could think of off the top of my head. They run through the horror, science fiction, and thriller categories, so don’t throw stones, and see where your favorite lands on my list.

Scream 4

I can already hear the groans and bemoans from fans. However, go back and watch this one. You’ll find that the revenge plot that is sewn up throughout the first 3 movies gets stabbed in the back in this one. Our dear friend Sidney Prescott (the namesake for my cat), is back after ten years. She goes back to her home town for a book signing and all hell breaks loose. The ultimate revenge may not be as cold blooded as the 1970s torture films, but it’s powerful enough to get you involved. I for one loved it, but only after I saw it twice. Perhaps you need to watch it again, and see Sidney take on a new foe in this nice tie up from Wes Craven.

Irreversible

This French thrill ride is one of the best movies in the category. The revenge for a sexual assault is insanity. Showcased backwards, this movie made a lot of people cringe because of the sexual situation inside a tunnel where the camera doesn’t flinch or turn away. It feels real, it makes your heart pound, and the real married couple did one hell of a job “faking” the most brutal sexual assault on camera. There is no clapping here, so don’t get me wrong. The director, Gaspar Noe filmed the revenge sequence in a way to make theater goers sick and disoriented. It doesn’t work that well on dvd, but it is still a heavy movie to watch.

Old Boy

Chan-wook Park blew me away when I first got a shot at seeing this. With several twists and turns, the movie that seemed like it was on rails, fell apart in the third act. A visual display of sick and twisted iconography, the film flows with a certain poetry that Spike Lee can’t possibly top. It’s a hard hitting example of how you can make cinema that hurts your senses, and causes you to think, “what if” more than it should. It’s hard to top Old Boy, so go watch it. If not for the story, than for the incredible fight choreography that happens in the movie.

Death Proof

Quentin Tarantino sure knows how to pay tribute to everything that made the 1970s cool. Sex, violence, revenge, and fast cars. The way the camera moves here, the dialogue, the framing of feet, breasts, lips, and everything that can be sexualized is done with such a swift manner. It’s that type of tight framing that makes Death Proof one of the better revenge flicks you’re going to want to see again. Kurt Russell is badass in this role, and he creates havoc with that stunt car of his. The ending is a bit odd to some, but it’s that iconic 1970s low budget schlock that made guys like Sid Haig famous.

The Punisher

Tom Jane created an iconic caricature in his portrayal of The Punisher. The movie was exactly what you’d expect from a revenge flick, and it was done right. Even though I think the modern day Ennis run made the character look more like Scott Hall. This brutal take on it may get lukewarm reviews, but it had enough gusto to get on my list. Jane loved the character so much he even did a short called “Dirty Laundry”. Easily one of my favorite Marvel Superheroes, The Punisher is no one you want to mess with.

Nightmare on Elm Street

The time is now for the ultimate revenge horror movie you need to throw into your blu ray player one more time, and that’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. You burned the guy alive, and now he’s coming back and he’s not taking any prisoners. As the series kept moving forward it got more comedic, but the roots of the story was about a pedophile that got his revenge after the community burned the guy. Sick huh? Watch it again for the first time and see how Wes Craven came into an iconic series and made Robert Englund filthy rich.

Top 5 Hardcore Revenge Horror Films

When it comes to certain genres of horror films, many people start to question their validity as pure entertainment. For instance, many people can’t stomach certain scenes in cinema that depict sexual situations that are of a “forced” nature. To put it bluntly, rape. There is nothing entertaining about that in the real world, yet the horror genre likes to put a spin on it, allowing viewers to see the atrocity in full view then come back with a punch to the balls of anyone that found it funny or even remotely entertaining. How do they do it? Simple. They introduce a revenge plot in which the raped woman or male in certain instances gets full revenge in the most cartoonish of ways, or in some cases the most atrocious of ways.

When thinking about hardcore revenge horror films, 5 stand out as some of the best and worst in many different ways. That’s why today we will be briefly spotlighting 5 of those movies that made me cringe or at least open my eyes wider as revenge is a dish best served piping hot full of shi……never mind.



#5 I Spit On Your Grave (1978) – This controversial movie came out with a brutal premise, but it doesn’t just go from bad times to bad times, there’s a reversal of roles and no sin is left unpunished. Well, unless you count the sin of low budget cinema and production flaws, but it was 1978, a different era in movie making, right? Anyways, this movie was remade, but lacked the substance and style of this original. If you are into genital mutilation revenge plots ala “Ricco The Mean Machine” then you have to look at t his one as one of the best examples of revenge!



#4 Last House on the Left (1972) – What was it with the 70s? Some of the most violent and disturbing images came out throughout those damn hippy years! Whatever the case is, Wes Craven proved to shock the movie world with a revenge kidnapping plot that had some more, well genital mutilation. This one is still worth checking out after all these years. Once again the remake doesn’t hold a candle to the original.



#3 Last House on the Beach (1978) – Eurotrash fans will love this classic tale that turns into a swift revenge plot. Teenage girls alone at a beach house are brutally messed up by thugs, and when one of the girls is skilled, our main heroine decides enough is enough and it’s time to get REVENGE!



#2 Northville Cemetery Massacre (1976) – Touted as one of the ultimate biker flicks of all time, this movie features a mix of all things exploitation film and all things revenge. You get a sense for violence where there are no heroes, and when the law rapes a young woman, it’s the lawless that have to man up and lay down, well….the LAW!



#1 Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1973) – This is the ultimate of all of the revenge films you’re going to see in regards to the premise of hardcore. This one takes the cake in a lot of ways. If you get the unrated version, this movie turns into a XXX romp; with a slow motion pop shot that is not only disturbing, but also very stimulating for those that like to see that sort of thing. One girl, one eye, one shotgun, and that’s all you need to know!

5 Horror Movie Reviews You Missed

I’ve been hard at work writing this website for about 5 years now. It has lasted longer than most of my other attempts at writing on the web, with the exception of my WWE review website that I still have up and update from time to time. My love for horror movies started a young age and through my years I have made sure to write commentary, reviews, and all sorts of things online about them.

Since today I didn’t have time to review a full movie, I decided to talk about 5 horror movie reviews that you’re missing out on. With 750+ reviews done on this site, it can be a daunting task to read everything that I have posted. In order to compensate for that, here is a quick 5 horror movie reviews that you’re missing out on that you might want to look into.



#5 Jack Frost Review – It’s that time again for the wintertime, and you better believe I did reviews on a variety of holiday horror movies. I did it two years in a row looking for only that type of movie to talk about. Jack Frost is one of the better ones that I found, but that’s not saying a whole lot.



#4 LIfeforce – Today you can get this movie in a variety of different ways, but when I first wrote about it, that movie was hard to find and wasn’t going to be easy to get a hold of. Now, you can even find it through Netflix. Oh well, the review was up and is up rather, and my writing suffers when I am tired.



#3 Chaos (2005) – This rare out of print movie is the hardest movie I’ve ever seen at the time. However, a Serbian Film tips the scales because that movie is just pure evil. This one though, is hard to watch on a variety of levels. It’s probably one of the hardest non-pornographic movies I’ve seen ever.



#2 Basket Case 3 – I’m one of the few bloggers that wrote about this out of print movie long ago. I’m sure it’s now in print, but I remember having a poster on my wall of this film in High School, and always loved the premise of having a Siamese twin in a BASKET! This one is outlandish, and reminds me of a better time in horror movie history.



#1 Death Note – An under-appreciated film that really didn't live up to the hype, but maybe I should give it a second chance...I don't know.

The Best Horror Movies in 3D

The third dimension, that place that allows you to jump into the movies and be a part of the action, at least if your eyes don’t automatically correct everything you’re watching. I wear glasses, so every time I see a 3D movie, I end up seeing things from a 2D perspective. Damn you genes! Oh and damn you jeans! I like Dickies, but that’s neither here nor there, or underwear! SCORE!

The Best Horror Movies in 3D definitely has a lot of people arguing, and if you search the online world, you’ll find all sorts of opinions on the matter. I find that my top 5 list that will be found here will also bring about a lot of arguments. But let’s be civil and see what my personal pick of the best 5 horror movies in 3D are! #5 – Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D



One year before I was born the people that made Jason a household name though that they could top the box office records set by their slasher film by throwing logic out of the window and selling those nifty paper and plastic lenses (the red and blue ones, those were rad) and what ensued was a maddening entrance of horror and slasher glory! This is by far one of my (5th actually) favorite movies in 3D! You can tell things were done for “cheese” factor because if it weren’t, someone would’ve been fired.

#4 – Saw VII: The Final Saw 3D



I still think that they can do “Son of Saw” or something, but whatever. The seventh film in the series, and the seventh movie that I plopped $12 to go see was done in 3D and I for one enjoyed myself. I loved the way the guts and stuff flew through the camera while I was trying to cut a hole in my popcorn…err…I didn’t really do that. I am not that smooth, and I don’t even remember seeing this with anyone. Saw VII is one of those movies that you either love or hate, and I for one didn’t hate it.

#3 – Amityville 3D



This movie came out and blew open the doors of the third dimension and made me as fall asleep. It was a remake that really wasn’t half bad, and even though I feel that the whole Amityville thing is overrated, they most certainly created a pretty cool landscape worth checking out again and again.

#2 – House of Wax 3D



It was the 1950s and while many chicks and dudes were making out in the backseat of their fancy cars, I’d like to think that there were some brave people watching House of Wax in 3D! Yep, this is a pretty cool upgrade to the original film, and it featured that classic Vincent Price take on horror. I might have said he was overrated in the past, but it’s pretty cool to see how this was part of the 3D horror landscape. It still holds up pretty well, and the music, well that’s the key to the thrills, right? Right?

#1 – Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare



I was 8 years old when this movie came out and was excited! My dad took me to see this awesome 3D movie and I bought into the whole 3D thing wearing my glasses through the whole thing. Even though the movie wasn’t amazing, it still had enough gusto to make my 8-year-old heart skip a beat here and there. It holds up ok, and the Iggy Pop song is still cool overall.

When it comes to European trash movies, I’m a big fan. Whether it’s exploring the evil and satanic nuns of Italian and Spanish fame, or I’m knee deep in the rape-revenge flicks that sliced in pornographic scenes with femme fatales that would put shotguns in the mouths of their oppressors, I love the genres that came out of this era of exploitation cinema.

This movie plays on the sadist ideologies that seemed to run rampant in the exploitation genre, but you’ll find that it’s not exactly gore filled, despite an awesome disc cover. Pre-order this one at a major savings.



Amer Blu Ray – One of the most interesting and beautiful pieces of giallo cinema is found in this 1970s Italian euro trash picture. It might be mislabeled but when you get to the eroticism that is presented here, you’ll understand why even a high definition transfer doesn’t change the notion. You’ll find the transfer to be one of the best reasons to own a blu ray player today.



Living Dead Girl Blu Ray – This French film ties together the hysterics of toxic waste and earthquakes into a terrifying tale about when zombies rise from the grave to feed on the flesh and blood of humans. This transfer is amazing, and you get an awesome amount of features to go with the bloodlust that is sure to entice even the most jaded of horror movie fans.

Did you really think I’d make it this far in the world of horror movie blogging? I didn’t think that at this point I’d be blogging to an audience of around 20 or 30, but look, there are people that actually like to read the site, even if I’m the worst movie reviewer since Jon Lovitz. The past Month

The Hammer Horror studio is best known for putting Christopher Lee in the role of Dracula time and time again, and while some people absolutely loathe the movies that came out of the studio, others find the films to be awesome, especially those that mixed exploitation and horror quite nicely. Admittedly, some of the movies are horrible, and boring, but there are some shining gems amidst a lot of the movies that were continually being pushed to the public. Here is my list of the top 5 Hammer Horror movies.



The Brides of Dracula – The Brides of Dracula put together sex and vampires together long before HBO decided to throw it all together. This film from the 1960s has that classic old school feel and while the pacing can use some work, the blood and artistic viewpoint of the Dracula myth is all presented quite nicely. The brides come out of their graves to become the antagonists of this gothic horror picture, and while we get another shot at Peter Cushing in his infamous rolls with Hammer, it’s Baron Meinster that really gets the credit here. I love it, and you might enjoy it too.



Dracula Has Risen From The Grave – The year was 1968 when this movie came out and Christopher Lee played Dracula, in one of the better interpretations of the original tale. When you see this movie you will feel as though you are on set, or watching a stage play, the way the camera moves, the way the costumes are meticulously made, the way the acting draws you in. The whole time you are not sure whether to cheer for the vampire or to cheer for the hero, because Christopher Lee makes the old bastard look so cool.



Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed – A year after the aforementioned film, Peter Cushing reprised his role of an evil Baron, only this time he isn’t a protagonist, he is all bad. This guy is pure evil and he is out to somehow get his way and create a monster that will do his bidding. While some people will be mad at me for including this film in this list due to the strong rape scene, I will say that it’s just a movie and a Hammer movie at that. Grow up, it’s not making it “cool”, ok. Peter Cushing and his monster get the #3 spot, even though Frankenstein must be destroyed!



The Curse of the Werewolf – This wasn’t exactly a great one, but after repeated viewings this movie is actually not half bad. The movie has a lot of slow points, then really picks up in the third and fourth act, with the wolf going nuts and getting beaten and shot. The cool thing here was the mutation scene, which was far better than the Universal Monster movies. Although, my favorite wolf transition happens in The Howling, this one is kind of cool, even though it was from the early 1960s.

Now, at this point you probably are wondering what I would pick for the number one spot, and when you see it, you’ll understand, especially because the poster is so rad.



Dracula 1972 – One of my favorite movie posters is also my favorite Hammer Horror movie. This film updates the story of Dracula and places him in the present (well at the time it was the present), and with an all-new updated cast of cronies to help him. We also are introduced to the descendent of Van Helsing with Jessica Van Helsing, and Johnny Alucard. (Alucard is not a descendent, but teams up with the girl) The movie is a bit dry, but it has some awesome moments with Christopher Lee once again playing the role of Dracula and making it hard not to cheer for him.

Nightmares Review

Just when I think I’m going to get a winning movie full of all the things that I enjoy from the scary movie genre, I get hosed bad. The movie I’m going to review today is a movie that was originally titled “Stage Fright”, but has been changed into the working title “Nightmares”. When I first started watching this, my ears nearly started to bleed, because the accents. I thought for sure I had entered the realm of a British horror movie. Then I scrambled and realized that this was not a British favorite, it was none other than another Ozploitation film, much in the vein of Argento or Bava. With that in mind, I went forth and was completely bored with the 80 minutes of slow moving, piece of crap movie that stars Jenny Neumann.

The movie opens up in a weird way. A young girl discovers her mom getting it on with a random dude. The first thing that I noticed was how tame the lovemaking was. If lovemaking were this tame in real life, I’d be a eunuch. In fact, it’s so bad that I swear the two didn’t even go through middle school health class. This of course traumatizes the little kid, and we fast forward to another place and time. On a dark road we are presented with another odd story.

We see the girl in the back of a car while her mom and her boyfriend or some dude start kissing up in the front seat. They continue to make out much to the child’s protest, and when she forces her hand, kaboom! Mom goes through the windshield and we are treated with some sick gore, and awesome moments of terror. But after this set up, we get roughly 40 minutes of boredom, and I forget why I submit to random crap.

We fast forward to the present time and the girl is now an older woman and an actress and when the body count of her drama peers starts to rise, she thinks that she is the one…but really it’s not what she thinks at all.

Another slow moving movie from the 1980s, and this one comes to us from the Australian film industry, which is usually on point with their exploitation stuff. This film just suffers from pacing, bad acting, and terrible narrative. The story is there somewhere, but it lacks that push that Bava or Argento had when they were making their classic mystery horror pieces. If you’re expecting gore, nudity, or anything else that made this a grindhouse instant classic, it’s void. You are going to be bored, much like I was, and unless you’re a diehard horror movie collector, you most likely are going to avoid this one.

Nightmares is really not a great movie, but it’s not the worst I’ve ever seen. Check it out if you have nothing better to watch, or you’re at work and the website you work on goes down for a few hours. Other than that, pass on this, but hey, buy the dvd from the links provided, I need the money and you need to get a good collection of movies up.

Top 5 Most Overrated Horror Movies

Mainstream media reviewers usually trash horror movies, but there are some movies that get praised by bigwig reviewers and I have to disagree with them. While compiling this list I ran into a lot of horror blogs that praise the following movies or have loathed others that just don’t make sense at all. It’s in that spirit that I write this post for your enjoyment, the top 5 most overrated horror movies that you can purchase in case you want to have the ultimate movie collection at your disposal, or want to give a gag gift for the horror aficionado in your life.



IT – The killer clown aspect of things really creeped out a lot of people, but when the climax of this mini-series/movie came to a head, you realized that there was just nothing to the master of horror but a giant spider. Oh wait; did I really spoil that for you? Yes, IT IS A GIANT SPIDER! Come on! My senses nearly exploded the first time I saw this movie, and even though the plot seemed to continually thicken until the climax, this one made me seriously mad. Why do so many people swear by this? Maybe “IT” by Stephen King the novel, is better, but this is NOT a quality film. In fact, it’s probably one of Stephen King’s more overrated work.



The Wicker Man – I’m not talking about the remake with Nicolas Cage, I’m talking about the original British Film. For whatever reasons this thing is included in the top ten or 50 lists of horror movies, and many reviewers swear by the creep factor of this film. I once argued with someone on Spill.com (the chick horror writer they have on staff) and she totally tried to play the black magic card on me, when in reality I was totally pwning her article. Too bad I didn’t have the Spill universe on my side, but whatever. The Wicker Man is a slow moving, terribly confusing, awful example of British Film Making. It is the most overrated thing to come out of Britain since David Beckham.



The Amityville Horror – This film came out during a time when exploitation films were coming straight to the jugular. This movie was based on a novel, which was based on a true story. The house that a suburban family purchases is haunted and causes one member to go insane. Sounds familiar huh? The movie did well financially to the point where they made 4 of them, and a remake, and so much more. Sure, it’s creepy on paper, but in film making history? This is another example of overrated horror seeping into the masses. You can’t possibly like this slow moving terrible movie. You have to wait 70 some odd minutes to get 5 minutes of action, and that’s it? Come on!



The Blair Witch Project – Touted as the scariest movie ever made, and millions of dollars later, people said it was. I saw it as a teenager and it failed to scare me at all. Go back and watch it, and you’ll find that this one is the worst piece of junk you’ll ever see. It’s filmed documentary style, it has a sense of urgency and despair, but it is not the scariest film ever. In fact, the sequel is a tidbit scarier than this one if you’re pulling hairs. If you thought this movie was scary, then I don’t know what to tell you? Movies like this are the reason why studios keep pumping out scare flicks that lackluster like say Paranormal Activity…sigh. Way overrated for its time, and not worth your time, unless you’re having a viewing party, in which case, why not?



The Ring – There’s this tape, if you watch it, you’ll pull your eyes out with boredom. I didn’t like this film nor did I like most of the Asian horror movies that were coming out back to back in the United States. Why? Because they were all based on similar premises, and they all had jump scares and stupid moments to make you scared of what’s going on. I for one thought it was boring, and the sequels were worst. The Ring made millions upon millions, and maybe it deserved it, but it really struck me as difficult to watch and boring.

The above 5 overrated movies aren’t going to ruin your life, but you will want your 2 hours back. There are far worst in the world, especially in regards to this genre, but when you get so many people praising trash, you have to gut check again and again. I’m sure you think something is overrated too, drop me a line, and let me know what you think. I for one think these are the top offenders, but I could always come up with more, such as “Drag me To hell” which was the most overrated horror film to come out in the last few years…I guess that should’ve been my number one, huh? Whatever.
