Dead Tone Review

Well, my goal of writing only werewolf movie reviews really tanked this month, and with that in mind I decided to throw in the towel and just start reviewing again. I managed to watch a cool slasher film that most people didn’t see for a few years until it was purchased by the people that were producing the Flavor Flav horror anthology television series for BET and thus we get this movie called Dead Tone.

I read some criticisms about how this movie was a rip off of “Scream” but when you get to the meat of the movie you start to realize that this stands all on its own with great prowess. The plot involves a prank call gone awry. A few kids are calling people and making them panic, and if they can reach 75 seconds on the call, they are declared a winner. The opening is very hard to watch, especially since many taboos are broken in the horror genre. Just in the first 15 minutes, you get child killing, a strangling, and a lot of violence that you just don’t get with a lot of other horror films today. Granted, this movie was made in 2005, and then released in 2007, so it’s not like a brand new one, but it definitely earns the R rating with how brutal the opening is.

The movie progresses nicely, setting up the twists that are to come and in predictable fashion the children are college students when we pick up the story. They are headed to a remote house where they can party and once again play the game of prank calls. It’s there that they run into the same villain that terrorized them as children, only this time they are going to get hacked!

The movie turns from dramatic thriller to serious slasher with a faceless villain smarter than the kids he’s chasing. You get all the gore you want here, and if you blink you’ll miss some cool sequences of death. The movie continues like this through the third act, right before it hits the climax in which we see who the villain really is, and a twist that my girlfriend even didn’t see coming!

By the time a rogue detective gets to the crime scene, we already get more twists than a pretzel. That’s terrible, I’m sorry.

Dead Tone is a refreshing slasher movie that had me guessing until the very end. I appreciated that this didn’t take itself too seriously, and delivered a good romp of horror fun. I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it for those that are looking for a hidden gem amongst the bargain bin movies at your local video store. Do they exist any longer? Man, remember the porn sections that were blocked by red ropes or something like that? Nevermind. Check this movie out and look for a brief cameo in the start by FLAVOR FLAV!

Werewolf Hunter Review

When it comes to finding good movies, I tend to judge the cover. I know, they always say not to, but I can’t help it. I’ve found some of my favorite movies and books have the coolest covers ever. Maybe it’s because I’m a graphic designer (bachelor’s degree), or maybe it’s because I’m a man and visual stimulation comes naturally to me in some way, I just absolutely love cover art. When I saw the cover art for Werewolf Hunter, I was definitely intrigued and thought it would be a good overall flick. What ended up turning out was a moderately successful werewolf movie that left me wanting something else. The movie is a Spanish one that was originally titled Romansanta, but for this review it’s called Werewolf Hunter, the proper name.

The movie is an interesting one, it is based on true events, and it’s not completely implausible. The plot revolves around a man that seduces women and then eats them. He then takes their fat and makes soap. When many women start disappearing a small town starts a hunt for all wolves, thinking it’s merely a wolf that is doing the damage. After some time, we are introduced to a hunter that claims he has been turned into a wolf and now must hunt his nemesis in order to once again become a man. The whole thing is tied up to a folklore tale of a man that claimed he killed many people but wasn’t to blame, because he was a werewolf.

The plot moves slowly, although there are some nice visuals. You get a sense for the time and place, with great costumes and beautiful women. Yes, there is nudity, so score one for those looking for a little Spanish boob action. Other than that, the movie feels like a Shakespearean play, as there is high drama throughout the film. By the time you get to the killing, it’s subdued and boring. There is a quick transformation scene that is kind of cool, but other than that, this felt like a made for television romp than anything else.

Werewolf Hunter is not a good movie, if you’re looking for horror. It’s a good piece of dramatic film making, but outside of that, it’s just not for scary film review fans or anyone that wants to have fun at the movies. I started to fall asleep towards the end, which is an awful sign. Not every movie can be a winner, but then again, my girlfriend liked it, so maybe it’s good for some, not for others. Wow, how awful are my reviews getting? I’ll have more reviews coming sooner than later.

Red: Werewolf Hunter Review

For today’s review I wanted to look at a little made for television movie about werewolves and boy did I find one that I didn’t hate, and was pleasantly surprised with. SyFy channel made this movie in 2010 and it starred some halfway decent acting mixed in with some interesting story telling elements and while it looked like it could be a straight to dvd feature, it still had elements worth noting that were far beyond the campy norm that usually plagues movies of this nature. Red: Werewolf Hunter takes the traditional route with horror, but there is enough to please just about anyone.

The movie revolves around the plot of Little Red Riding Hood, as she and her family are now hunters of werewolves. The first sequence of this film really hooked me. We get to see grandma get torn to pieces by a wolf, and while this moment was really harsh, it would not live up for the rest of the film, as this is the most violent scene you get without the aid of computer graphics. Grandma doesn’t live and through the floorboards of the attic a young Red watches on.

We are then moved forward to a new day, a new home and a couple visiting the woods to grandmother’s house. There we meet the werewolf hunters all in line with “Red” and there are some laughable moments in the introduction of each character, but you just live with it. The problem that plagues the family is a new breed of werewolf that can morph whenever they want, which means that outside of the full moon, the family will now have to fight.

When the fiancée of “Red” gets bitten, all hell breaks loose and the family has to fight the new villain. The villain named Gabriel is awesome, in my view, mixing elements of “Prison Break” with something a bit more macabre. If you don’t get behind the family of hunters, you will get behind this villain, as he owned the screen whenever he was on. Outside of that, the rest was just a bit bland.

The movie goes through the same elements that you would expect with any other horror film in this genre with people dying, the body count rising and the ultimate showdown between hunters and hunted. In the end, you get a favorable ending and that’s about it.

Red: Werewolf Hunter had some great moments. I liked the fighting for the most part, and did enjoy the movie more than I thought I would. I think SyFy is getting better with these pieces as the movie had a certain element of budget that is often times lacking. I didn’t like the graphics of the wolves, but I guess I can live with them. Overall, this wasn’t half bad, and would recommend it. It’s not great, by any means, but it’s far better than you’d expect.

Mom Review

Today we are featuring a film that came out in 1991. It is one that flew beneath the radar of millions of people, and only a select few ended up watching it. I saw the posters for it when I was a kid, but I never did venture forward to see it. That is, until last night when it was time once again to watch another werewolf spectacular! Today, we will be discussing the horror comedy named Mom.

The movie starts out interesting, with a loner at a bus stop waiting to head towards Los Angeles. He is in the darkness when a woman tries to befriend him. When she offers him a drink, he obliges by opening up her blouse and killing her wolf style! This kind of weird “rape” scenario really didn’t do too much in the way of introducing the character as more than a rapist, until the flash of the full moon offset the initial shock.

The plot fast-forwards to the present where an old lady and her family are enjoying Christmas and another year gone by. Things are normal, until our drifter ends up wanting to rent a room inside grandma’s house. When she tries to cook the man a nice dinner, he doesn’t want to eat, and then he attacks! The makeup here is fast, and no transformation scene is shown, but we get a full wolf style mask and jowls to prove that it’s a wolf.

The kicker here is that the werewolf is blind and states that he’s immortal and can turn grandma into a flesh-eating wolf. This transitional stage and process isn’t really shown, and the movie moves into a more buddy-style movie where the older lady (mother) is being groomed to become a full-fledged werewolf by the super villain. Of course the wolf plays blind, but we all know he can see.

When the old lady’s son, whom also is a reporter for the news station, finds out that his mother is eating the flesh of homeless people, he decides that the stranger needs to go and goes on attack, and this of course is where the movie starts to derail for everyone.

The movie throws a wrench into the werewolf lore. Forget about silver bullets, or anything like that, our main villain is killed by a fire, that’s it. He’s set on fire and he goes away into the dust. That leaves grandma (mother) with the vice of eating human flesh, so the son locks her away, and this of course starts an odd kind of “trapped” movie.

Billed as a comedy, “MOM” was supposed to be an interesting taking the werewolf lore; instead it proves to be a slow moving romp through lackluster jokes, and interesting problems. You start to wonder whether or not you’d let your mom kill to survive or would you kill her and save humanity? There are some moments where this movie becomes far too dramatic for its own good, and I found myself wanting to fall asleep.

I don’t necessarily recommend “MOM” unless you absolutely have to see every werewolf movie out there. It’s a bad example of the wolf lore, but it’s not terrible. It has a few shining moments, and an ending that will have you either applauding or simply laughing, you decide.

The Beast of Bray Road Review

For those of you that are new, or haven’t really checked out my site for a while, you’ll be glad to know that November 2012 is Werewolf month, and I will be looking at only werewolf movies. That’s roughly 24 – 30 movies related to t he evil creature.

Today’s pick will be our first entry into the genre. The movie is a 2005 horror movie that was based on a true story, or so they say, and features a creature so scary, that it most likely haunted a small town for a long period of time. The movie I’m talking about is The Best of Bray Road.

The movie starts off a bit slow, setting up the characters that are involved. We have the classic police force made up of locals in a small town with one transplant from the big city. He gets a lot of crap for being a “city” boy, and he has to deal with the attitudes of the town’s people as well as the department. He stumbles upon a missing person and he then starts to get notices that people are getting mauled by what appears to be a monster. It’s at around the third or fourth report that we get the inside story of what is going on, that a werewolf, the beast, is out there and has come back to seek revenge on the city that once took it out back in the 1800s.

The movie doesn’t really have much in the way of a transformation scene, nor does it do much for the genre, it just throws you (the viewer) into a small town in Wisconsin that is having problems with a werewolf and it’s up to the sheriff from out of town to stop it.

The monster is terrible. It’s absolutely obvious that there is someone in a wolf suit and it’s painfully obvious that the budget wasn’t spent on creating the monster suit, however, I didn’t expect greatness from a straight to dvd movie. The movie moves forward relatively slow after a few gorey death scenes, and by the time you’re ready to tune out the men in the audience get treated to some boobs. The skin and sin is short lived as our hero and a few helpers take their guns to the woods and try to hunt down the creature.

What seems like a straight up horror movie turns into a murder mystery in which you’re left guessing who the wolf really is. The contemporary rulebook on wolves and horror gets thrown out the window, and you have to just go with whatever is fed to you on this one as the movie dives off the deep end in the later parts of the film.

Overall, not a terrible movie, but not one of my favorites by far, but it shouldn't be a surprise since it's a straight to dvd film. It’s interesting to see what a low budget can get you, and you do get some decent acting out of Sarah Lieving and Tom Downey, but B-Movie mainstay Jeff Denton didn’t really do much to push his acting abilities. Then again, the whole movie isn’t exactly award winning. I thought it had its moments, especially with a few jump scares that even Hollywood steals from time to time. Check out the Beast of Bray Road, if you’re an ultimate fan of werewolves, otherwise, wait for something far better.

8MM Review

When I first started Scary Film Review, many years before, I didn’t always review straightforward horror movies. I found that many mainstream thrillers were just as scary if not more horrified than modern horror. Every now and then I’ll run into a mainstream mystery, thriller, or drama that has a subject matter that is worthy of the Scary Film Review blog. That was the case with the following movie. 8MM came out in 1999 and it was directed by the guy that ruined the Batman franchise, but somehow, this Nicolas Cage film brought elements of horror to the mainstream in a way that should have been on par with “The Silence of the Lambs” but probably filtered out somehow. Join me today in a review of 3 elements that were scary in the Joel Shumacher film “8MM”.

SNUFF – The first thing that you’ll notice about this film is the subject matter. The movie is about a detective that is looking for a girl that could’ve been murdered in a snuff film. Now, I have talked about the genre in the past, and even saw a documentary about this. Is it real? Well, many people still swear that they have seen one, but honestly, there have not been a lot of real snuff movies available to the public. Hardcore, porn, and ultra violence, sure, but real snuff? That’s something that scares many people, and only serial killers have been known to distribute and record their stuff. That being said, the subject matter of the film shows clips of ultra violence and if you’re squeamish, you will flinch, as they are prominent and urgent to the story’s main plot.

Slavery – The second horror element that you’ll find in this film is a mix of violence and sex within the adult industry. Our hero, in this case a private detective, finds himself in the world of underground pornography, and he’s not sure what he’s getting into, until he is in too deep. Does this exist? Yes. I’ve seen many a CNBC special and even worked at an independent video store, and a small stint in the adult industry while I was in college. There is in fact sex trafficking, deviance, and a major criminal element within the adult industry that many people don’t know about. That is shown here in a very “comical” way at times, but it’s not something that is completely fictitious. It becomes truly scary to know that sex trafficking, kidnapping, and murder are all part of the pornography industry, even though many refuse to read, or know about it.

Missing Persons – The scariest thing about this movie is how hard it hits home for people. I am not a victim of this, but I do know several people that have gone missing. A friend of mine disappeared once, and a few years later resurfaced as a bum on the streets. For years his family searched for him and he was nowhere to be found. What happened? For all I know he decided to walk away. But how many girls, and young boys are taken away and either murdered or kept in someone’s basement with mothers and fathers waiting for them? This element is sad, and is a catalyst for the plot mid-way through the film.

8MM takes a slow moving plot and shifts into high gear in the third and fourth act. The movie is not without comical flaws, and over reaction moments with Nic Cage, but there are some serious sick and twisted elements. In the hands of a “horror” director, this movie would have seriously taken a more macabre road. However, you get just enough tinges of serious shock to make this one more than just a thriller, and categorize it into a “scary” film. If you've seen it already, give it one more go with new eyes, and you might enjoy it more this time around.

Phantoms Review

When watching the movie “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”, in a pivotal scene Jay yells out “Affleck, you the bomb in Phantoms”, and runs out of the scene. While throwing a party, in which many people that I invited didn’t show up, I had the chance to watch Phantoms again, and boy did it leave a different impression than the first time I saw it all the many years ago.

First and foremost, the movie is based on a novel that was written by Dean Koontz. That guy can throw out literature as fast as Stephen King and it’s debatable who has more money at this point. Either way, the movie follows a very “Stephen King” adaption route, as Koontz wrote the screenplay as well. You really feel that this movie was adapted, from the first scenes where a couple of girls are arriving home after a trip. When they discover that their hometown is empty, they find that people are falling out dead, and there’s more to it as they discover that the people still alive, aren’t sure what’s going on.

To sum this movie up into a simple thing would be as simple as saying it’s about alien invasion. It’s really interesting to see how this develops, but it’s not quite the same “aliens” that you expect. In fact, it’s more of a biohazard than anything else, but the alien substance attacks and creates killer zombie like beings, and dogs, and well, you have to see it to truly understand. Mix a few things like “The Blob” with “The Stuff” and throw in “The Thing” and you start to see where the movie goes in terms of a villain.

As the movie progresses the crack shot team headed by the sheriff (played by Ben Affleck) go through stages of hell where they kill off anything that moves in hopes of getting rid of the enemy at large.

The movie breaks a few taboos, including killing children, but overall it’s a tame ride through 90 minutes of predictable alien like invasion. The movie does flow nicely, with a lot of cliché and one-liners thrown in for good measure. This lightweight horror film is not going to shock most, but it’s well done, fast paced, and worth checking out. I must admit, Jay was right, Ben Affleck is bomb in Phantoms, which is surprising considering everyone hated this guy….until he made the best movie ever…”The Town”, or at least a great one. Anyways, check out Phantoms again it’s worth it. I loved it, you might love it too.

The Woman In Black Review

I’m not a big fan of slow moving movies, you might know that about me, but there are some movies that are worth looking at even if they are slow and prodding. I was hoping that the reviews about this film were not true, and that there was enough of a ghost story to really attract me, but alas, there was a lot of ambiance and then, well, a flutter in the wind before the climax revealed nothing more than another poor attempt to scare the audience.

The Woman in Black was released earlier this year and critics were excited to see that Daniel Radcliffe was in an adult movie that didn’t have anything to do with wizards. I for one thought he did well with the role, even if it wasn’t exactly too trying. Heck, I could’ve done the same role with a lantern and only 28,000 dollars for the performance. Yeah, that’s right, it doesn’t take much to sort through papers and do a little here and there.

The cool part about this movie solely relied on the atmosphere. The atmosphere was great and that made the story really creepy, but overall, the movie lost me through the plot points. There is a crazy woman, a dead child that wasn’t buried properly, and a weird community that is struggling with ghosts and lost children? The creepy moments relied heavily on the killing of children, but it was a diluted mess towards the midpoint.

Outside of a few creepy moments, the movie turned into a very odd horror movie. I wasn’t sure what was going on towards the third act, and eventually I threw in the towel. Unfortunately, The Women in Black is a boring moving that doesn’t really showcase the power of the story that might be involved with the original novel. I found it boring, and had I not focused on the set design, I wouldn’t have made it through the whole thing. This is a bad movie, and just not worth it, unless you’re a great fan of Radcliffe and in that case, buy the blu ray, it looks incredible.

Club Dread (Again) Review

On Friday, September 9, 2011 I reviewed the film Club Dread, and recently I sat down to watch it again, why? Because it was on and I didn’t want to do anything else, and well, I had time. So in the sake of fairness, I wanted to give it one more shot and review it, because things change when you see things a second time.

Club Dread is a comedy horror movie that was produced by the comedy guys known as Broken Lizard. Those idiots brought you “Super Troopers” and while it didn’t set the box office on fire, it definitely has a fan base that is quite large. Well, they would release some stupid crap that flopped and would cause them to sputter out of control and back to Canada (I think they are from Canada), but they did put out a gem of a film, that no one saw called Club Dread.

Not to be confused with Judge Dread, this movie is about a party gone totally wrong. The movie carries a simple plot, as you are introduced to a variety of laughable characters that all have jobs at a resort island where good times are to be had. As the movie goes through some stereotypical horror set up, the body count starts to rise and pretty soon everyone starts blaming one another.

The movie derails midway, but in a good way, ditching most plots for straight up killing and gore. The death sequences are done with a comedic flair so you don’t have to turn away, but instead indulge in the unbelievable moments that would cause someone’s severed head to get stuck on a vinyl record player.

Let’s take a moment to mourn the death of a record player on film.

Ok, the movie picks up speed in the third act where we find out that the obvious choices for the killer are not to be blamed as they get killed off, and a serious tone sits over the movie. Once the island (and the guests) finds out that there is a killer on the loose and panic sets in, everyone starts to abandon and go back home. However, the team members left from the serial killer’s path stay to kick some serious ASS!

The movie looks great, and the jokes get funnier the second time around. There are some great zingers that don’t get enough attention, and fly by so fast that you forget you're watching a horror movie.

My favorite part of this movie is definitely the endings, multiple endings. Well, they are logical conclusions, in which we see the villain revealed, and his death imminent although he comes back again and again and again and a laughable comeback that had me nearly on the floor the second time around.

Club Dread is not going to win any awards from the mainstream media, but if you give it another shot, you’ll find that this fun romp through horror cliché is actually really good and worth your time. I know I now peg it as one of my top 10 horror comedies, even if it does have some moments of absurdity. I highly recommend checking out Club Dread one more time, and seeing if you like it as much as I do.

Cabin in the Woods Review

I couldn’t escape hearing about this movie, and how it was the greatest thing to ever come to cinema. I didn’t get to watch in theaters despite trying to do so on a regular basis, so I had to wait for it to come to dvd and thanks to Netflix I finally got it. I would buy more movies, but I don’t make any money on this site, so it’s difficult to do so. Anyways, this movie was supposed to be the second coming of the horror film, but nope, it certainly wasn’t, but it did have some interesting points. I am now going to rant about the movie known as Cabin in the Woods.

Not Your Average Cabin

Guess what? The beginning of this film completely throws you into another world, one that is not like anything you’ve seen in previous cabin style movies. Now, I have listed the top 10 camping movies, which usually has a rag tag group of friends in situations that should and do kill them with ease, and that genre is definitely something that comes into the spotlight every year, at least for a few romps with the same formula of death and despair and of course a sprinkling of sex.

This time around there is a spoiler right from the start of the movie, and something that doesn’t lend itself well to purists looking for that traditional romp in the woods. Sure we get a little bit of wooden fun, and even sex, but it is a puppet master’s dream because that drives every twist and turn in the film.

The cabin itself is nothing more than a location that will swallow these people whole, and the foreshadowing is evident at every moment in the first 25 minutes. If you don’t catch all the signs, that’s ok, you’ll get thrown into the fray soon enough.

Deadly Sins

The movie has a great deal of the same standard of deadly sins that will shoot you in the arm with cool. Each stereotype is seen a mile away and when the demise happens to them, the teenage horror fan in you goes nuts; I know I was happy with the way things were going down. Then things start to unravel and the hinges completely break loose.

The death scenes are cool, not too gory, but definitely enough to give you blood shed without making you throw up, even the unrated version doesn’t fill you with so much blood you want to vomit, well, at least not in the first 50 minutes.

The Disconnect

The third act and subsequently the fourth act is definitely where this movie completely blows up in your face. Like a shotgun blast sequence happening when the protagonist opens the door (see Boogie Nights or Kill Bill 2), the whole world comes to an end (literally) and all hell is unleashed on the surviving 2.

With a world of monsters chasing the final 2 idiots, we get visited from a member of science fiction past and most certainly got me cheering, even if the fight sequence that followed was unlike what I would expect from “Aliens”.

Flutter and End

The end was lame. Have you ever collaborated with someone? This movie felt like a couple of writers got together and kept 1 upping each other with ideas and they didn’t edit things out, they took that and put it all into a film that shoehorns every horror element and comedic timed joke you’d expect from a self-aware horror flick.

Is it worth your time?

Yes! However, it is going to disappoint you. The movie mixes a lot of genres to bring a fresh take on horror, far better than the hype of “Drag me to Hell”. It delivers with some great moments, but you will definitely ask more questions than just focus on the story. Check out Cabin in the Woods on Blu Ray, it’s best looking that way. I’d have to see it again.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror

And now, a guest post, about a movie that I find to be amazing. Enjoy, while I set up more movies and what not to review in the near future.

When it comes to scary movies, there are plenty to choose from given their long history. Going as far back as 1922 with the release of “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok, this German Expressionist horror film truly gave rise to the scary movie genre through director F.W. Murnau's inventive use of the German Expressionist film ideals and chiaroscuro lighting effects – the former now defunct and the latter used rarely in film.

The film opens with an idyllic scene between Thomas Hutter and his wife, Ellen. Interspersed with narrative cards, it isn't long before Thomas is off to go and seek out his client, the good Count Orlok, whom resides in Transylvania.

Doesn't this sound a tad familiar? It should, as “Nosferatu” is adapted from Bram Stoker's “Dracula”, with Thomas and Ellen Hutter as analogues to Johnathon and Mina Harker, and Orlok to Dracula himself. Now imitation is the surest form of flattery, but as there was no film version of “Dracula” prior to this release, one can hardly accuse the German filmmakers of rehashing something that had already been done. The same cannot be said for Hollywood today, which is filled with remakes of classics such as “The Exorcist”, “The Amityville Horror”, and “Halloween”.

In 1922, when “Nosferatu” was released, supernatural horror, and scary movies in general, were not commonplace. Instead of relying on the tried and true gimmicky tactics of today's films; blood-soaked jaunts consisting of thrilling chases and virginal teens running away from their tormentor, this unauthorized version of Bram Stoker's “Dracula” relied on a live symphony playing the score for this silent film gem.

The original score to the film was composed by Hans Erdmann, but due the majority of it being lost, what is heard during recent runs of the film is only a reconstruction of the score as it was played in 1922. Despite that fact, what begins as a light film in terms of the musical score, quickly descends into the macabre. The music and the visual scenery combine to fill viewers with stomach-dropping dread, putting you into a perpetual state of anxiety, wondering what the next scene will bring.

This is a film that doesn't scare as so much haunts with its atmospheric visuals and music. While by today's standards, “Nosferatu” might not stand out as the forefather of the scary movie due to it's unique and dated style, it is nonetheless a film that has endured the test of time and has been widely praised by film critics far and wide as one of the most influential masterpieces ever made.

“Nosferatu” is an undisputed classic of the scary film catalog that paved the way for other classics like 1932's “Freaks”, 1935's “The Bride of Frankenstein”, and of course 1960's “Psycho”. Without Murnau's vision, or Schrek's gaunt and creepy Orlok, the film landscape would not have been the same.

Hostel 3 Review

I’ve been eyeballing this movie for a while every time I visit the video store, or my local retailer, and I finally got it into my grubby hands. This film is a direct sequel to the Hostel movies, and it is the latest to come from the franchise. The trilogy isn’t exactly the most lucrative or praised of film sets, but apparently there was enough interest to film a third one and then try to sell and rent it to idiots like me. The movie takes the club that everyone seems to want to join, in order to torture people, moves to Las Vegas. The setting is sin city and we join up with a group of 20 somethings that are going to find out that they are the hunted in a sick sad world. Hostel 3 is not going to win many awards, and most people won’t even care for the gore, which happens from time to time, amidst sexualized moments from B-movie actresses that needed a pay check of sorts.

The movie is simple enough, a group of friends go to Vegas for a bachelor party, and things get out of hand. No, not just drunkenness but something more, they slowly get trapped into a game of death where only members of a club get to decide the fate of the captives. The way you saw old Hostel movies changes in a great way and you end up seeing a group of people that get to vote, like a game, on what kind of death the trapped will get.

By the time I figured out what was going on in this film, I was bored. The pacing lacks luster, even though the opening sequence is amazing for a straight to dvd film. The movie features some gore, some nudity, and a lot of torture, but I don’t like the way the film just drags through the middle, and right when you think that there can’t be anything worse happening, the movie throws in a subplot about revenge and what not…I hated it.

Hostel 3 is one of the worst straight to dvd sequels I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot. I admit, I did want to see it because of the cover, and the premise on the back of the box, but I didn’t like the way it played out. You will most likely hate it too, as the pacing and the gore don’t really add up to more than just a cash grab into a series that peaked on the first film. This is a terrible example of how studios cash in on franchises for no apparent reason other than to make a few bucks. If you must, check out this dvd, otherwise, avoid it.

Misery Review

The master of horror, Stephen King, created an interesting view of his own nightmares in a book called Misery. That book would become an instant classic when Rob Reiner took the helm to direct one scary woman, Kathy Bates. The film has not only scared millions of audiences, it has become one of the most recognizable pieces of horror for anyone that aspires to be a professional writer.

Misery's plot is very simple on the surface. A writer crashes amidst a snow storm and looks to be on his way to kicking the bucket, but is rescued by a woman that claims she is his biggest fan. The woman takes the author to her cabin, and unravels hell on earth for the writer, and wow, does it get worse before it gets better.

There are a lot of scary moments in this film, and it's not what everyone thinks. The best part of the movie is the pacing. The pace is deliberate, and for some a bit tedious, but right when you're ready to stop the movie, something bad happens, and every few minutes the level of fear gets higher, and louder and eventually all hell breaks loose. This film really feels like a play, that is until Annie (the antagonist) breaks Paul's ankles with a sledge hammer. Sadly, it's what most people remember.

Desperation, that's what I remember most about this film. There is a great deal of desperation expressed by the trapped author, as he can't go anywhere. Most people would say that he should've just pulled out his cell phone or gotten to a phone in general, but that's not possible when you're not living in 2011, you're int he late 80's or early 90's. Yes, you have to place yourself in an era where communication is not very easy, and your life could end in a car crash somewhere. I'm not sure what is sadder, the fact that most people that will see this movie can't recall a time when they weren't online 24 hours a day, or available via cell phone all the time, or even in communication with the rest of the world at all hours, or that this movie won't scare most audiences in 2011. The desperation found in this film by James Caan is classic, and a testament to how good his performance was in this film.

There's no gore, no sex, and no major sickness in this movie. The majority of this film's scary points all focus on psychological terror and the pain and desperation of being isolated, alone and without contact to the outside world.

When I first saw this movie, I didn't really like it. I was a kid and couldn't imagine how it could be scary. Then as an adult I read the book and rewatched the movie, and boy oh boy, it is scary notion to have a fan claim they love you, to the point of madness. There is a sure fire horror to this film that lasts through the facade of a three character act. You'll be hard pressed to find a better acted horror film, with such psychology in modern horror. The film works on a variety of levels and really is entertaining. You'll have to think a little more than usual to get the horror elements, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you haven't seen Misery, you're missing out, it's a high quality flick.
