Vicious Fun Review

Once again, we have an awesome poster that has drawn me into watching the movie. There’s something about a good poster, and it’s something that you have to agree with. They say don’t judge a book by the cover, but hey, there’s a lot of graphic designers that work hard to design those covers. Then again, this isn’t a book. “Vicious Fun” is a streaming only movie from Shudder and it has a lot to offer, even if I don’t agree that it is strictly horror. Horror comedy? Perhaps it’s a little funnier the second time viewed, but let’s see what we got here, as we review this Shudder exclusive. 

The movie has an interesting plot, a lovable loser stalks the date of his roommate, only to find out that he’s not what he seems. Upon drinking way too much, and passing out in a closet, he wakes up to find himself in a support group for serial killers, and the fun goes off the rails when they discover that he isn’t one of them. From there we are thrown into a loop of fighting as one of the killers is actually a bounty  hunter persona, and is there to extinguish the villains, and that becomes the crux of the movie overall. 

The movie starts a little slow, and you really aren’t sure where it’s going. If you read the premise and tag line, then you probably know what to expect slightly, but things get out of control in the second act and continue to escalate from there. That being said, the movie picks up the pace  midway through, and you are treated to plenty of kills, gore, and fighting. There’s a few tropes of horror including the unstoppable villain that seems hell bent on attacking, and of course the gore of limbs, eyeball gouges, and more. The gore is played up to comedy standards at times, but it still there as a valuable element. The movie earns their horror card several times, but it is definitely leaning towards comedy a lot. A horror comedy is truly what this is, even though it isn’t always playing up scenarios for laughs. There is plenty of humor found in this film, however, if you have a dark sense of it. 

Overall, “Vicious Fun” is just that, fun. It’s a dark comedy horror movie that delivers on a lot of levels. It’s funny, it’s gross, it features enough gore to make even the most jaded fan happy, and well, it’s worth your time. If you have Shudder you’re going to want to check this one out, and if you don’t have Shudder, fork over the $6 for it, it’s well worth your time. 

The Babysitter Review

The Babysitter (2017) Poster 

I’ve seen my fair share of babysitter movies, and no, I don’t mean porno. But this is not the same thing that you are going to get from the 1980s adventures, or the mid 1990s babysitting movies or sitcom shows. This is a rated R horror movie and it is perhaps one of the best horror movies to come out of any studio in the year 2017. I know high praise, right? But for whatever reason the Netflix people were able to pull off what many mainstream studios haven’t been able to put together, and that’s a solid horror movie with a lot of elements that make sense, rather than getting to the nonsensical route. I’m not going to say that this is ultra realistic, but there are enough elements to make you think twice about nominating another movie as the best of 2017.

The movie is simple enough, starring Samara Weaving as a babysitter, and Judah Lewis as the pre-teen that is in love with her. The two have a good chemistry together, and are friends. But things go awry when he comes out of his room to see the babysitter and her friends doing a cult satanic ritual. They figure out that he saw something, and they want to kill him because he’s a virgin, and that’s where things take a turn. He’s not going to play dead, he’s going to fight back, and as the teens try to kill him, he turns the tables and while “Home Alone” had funny moments, this takes those funny elements and kills off the villains one by one, until the finale leaves your jaw on the floor, because this is not your average horror movie. It has consequences, and those consequences are absolutely thrilling at times.

The gore is turned up. This is not a kid’s movie. The villains get brutally taken care of, and our main character is not without punishment either. He gets beat up a bit, he’s slapped around, but the villains aren’t nearly as smart and end up getting beat up a lot, and eventually, man, you have to see the movie because there’s a sick stunt at the end to really make you question where McG and Brian Duffield came up with this idea.

All of the movie’s elements are well thought out. You get explanations for most of the movie, and when the thrills go down, they are filmed with a precision that only McG could bring forth. He throws in a lot of action that is very well done, giving this a killer production line, and a stellar focus of driving, burning, and gun play. Oh, did I mention the gore? Holy crap, this is a hard R if it were to be rated for theatrical release.

Overall, “The Babysitter” is perhaps the best horror movie that I personally saw in 2017. It has everything you want, without going with gratuitous nudity which is the only reason I won’t say that this is a perfect movie. Other than that, this is a great romp, fun, and comedic, with incredible stunts and a story that actually makes sense overall.

I would recommend that you get this on Blu Ray or something, but it’s only available on Netflix streaming. A service that I’m going to have to buy again, because the company keeps putting out some stellar horror and other stuff.

The Proliferation of Horror Movies Online

Rewind the years and you will find that getting the best in horror movies was not exactly an easy task. In fact, if your local video store didn’t have a good selection of the genre, you didn’t get to watch a lot of things outside of the movie theaters. That has all changed with the proliferation of streaming content. With so many people using high speed internet in their home, it’s interesting to see how many are starting to find out some of the best media in the world can be streamed into their home. Whether you’re looking to Stream movies online in the UK or you’re doing it anywhere else in the world, you’ll find that these modern times are perfect for the modern horror fan.

It’s not just the horror fans that need to rejoice, any other genre of movie that you can think of is available at your finger tips on your computer, or even video game console! Many of the best movies aren’t just free to stream some can be purchased or rented. That means that you will not have to go to your local video store and hope they have it in stock, and that means that you can test the waters and see if a film is worth your money before you invest in purchasing it on blu ray or anything like that.

Don’t get me wrong, I was once a fan of the local video store, but since there are none in my area, I have found that streaming content is far easier and cheaper for that matter. No longer am I dropping hundreds of dollars a week on renting physical media when I can easily just click a button and in a few minutes I can be watching the latest and greatest in horror, science fiction, comedy, or anything I desire for that matter.

Some of the best movies I’ve seen in the past few years, even the ones on this website that I’ve reviewed has been through streaming. For instance, the last review of Scream 4 that I just did, was done through online viewing instead of buying or renting the blu ray. I didn’t end up seeing it in theaters and didn’t want to drop a lot of money on purchasing it from a store if I could easily see it online or through my video game console. It’s this type of methodology that is going to continue to proliferate online, and I for one am up for it.
